Sourcing Segment Display
« on: July 19, 2024, 08:50:04 am »
I need a display like this for a temperature control project.

Is there any possibility of finding one with a display vendor/manufacture? Or, do I need to go for a custom display?

You may try to find a ready made one manufactured for air conditioners. You can have it manufactured as per your drawing but there may be a tooling cost around a few hundred $.

What type of display do you want?  (LCD, LED, VFD ...)

Do you need only one, for a personal project or many for sell your product?

Perhaps you could find some spare display for freezers o similar (to have the snowflake)
Of course, then you need to reverse enginer the pinout.

Or you could use a graphical lcd, if you have enough power.

I need LED display. This may turn into a product. For now, it is PoC.

I want to use the segment LED to keep the cost low.

As you suggested, I am trying to reverse engineer from an existing product.

If you have a volume of at least 10K/Year Everlight and KingBright can make custom tooling for you. The tool will cost around 500 to 1000 usd.

They also may have something similar already made that can share with you, often icons are not that specific because customers add a acetate layer to use the same display with various projects.

Another option is to make a custom light guide and use 0603/0805 LEDs, is quite simple for low volumes using 3D priting

Like others said, you can contact a factory and for a fee they'll make a few samples for you.

Dave went through this process in a series of videos :

If you don't want to deal with that, your next best option is a dot matrix LCD or OLED display. \

For example : 64 x 48 pixels https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/midas-displays/MCOT048064A1V-BI/18088021

lots of 128x64 graphical lcd displays : https://www.tme.eu/gb/katalog/lcd-graphic-displays_112283/?params=1132:1590931,1493194,1469417,1517945&onlyInStock=1&productListOrderBy=1000014

you could potentially use classic alphanumeric lcd displays, but with 3-4 rows and fewer characters horizontally.

For example a 4 rows x 10 characters : https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/display-visions/EA-DOGS104N-A/8021519

or 4 rows x 16 characters : https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/display-visions/EA-DOGS164W-A/9972237

cheaper at other places : https://www.tme.eu/gb/katalog/lcd-alphanumeric-displays_112282/?params=1140:1931404,1469379_number-of-characters-columns-x-lines:10x4,16x4&productListOrderBy=1000014

You can "upload" custom characters into such displays so you could generate the two digits for temperature across several rows (ex each digit uses 3 characters horizontally and 4 rows vertically)
