If you do this as a "learning experience" project, or just for "fun" then go ahead and make it cool and filled with all the bells and whistles you can think of. I'd definitely do the same - been there many times ;-)   

But for something that is to be sold/used by others I think it would be wiser to have an as cheap and easy to use product as possible (without compromising the required functionality). Stick to the basics and let it be really good at *one* thing. Just because it could have a lot of bolted on features that possibly could come in handy doesn't mean it's a good thing.
