If you can read this, then it means you will be using the new dedicated server!
Hopefully everything went ok, but it will take some time to transfer some recent attachment files.

Please let me know in this thread how you find the performance compared to the old server, as this is vital whether or not I keep this new server running and if it has fixed the slow performance problems.

The new server IP is 184.173.12.165 and it runs both the Wordpress blog and Simple Machines forum, and nothing else, so it should be pretty damn quick!

Only one problem: the avatar disappeared from my profile. I had to upload it again

Yeah, mine is gone too, I'm not sure why.
I think this happened last time too, will investigate...

The avatars and attachments didn't copy correctly, so won't show up until fixed.
FileZilla my FTP program had "Treat files without extension as ASCII files" on by default! and all attachments/avatars/thumbnails in SMF have no extension.

Re-uploading now, but it could take many hours...

Serves you right for using such an ancient, weird (2 TCP connections?) and usually insecure protocol as FTP. Better use something more modern like SFTP (no relation, despite the name) next time.

If you have shell access, transferring directly between servers will probably be much faster.

I use also FileZilla to upload on my web site from time to time.
I use it for over three years, no nags so far.

Much as SFTP is superior and much more secure it isn't always an available option.

So bug the hosters to support something better than FTP. There is really no excuse for authenticated FTP anymore. It's insecure, has stupid ideas like the distinction between ASCII and binary files and is a pain in the butt for either the person administering the firewall at the client (active mode) or server (passive mode) side because of its use of multiple connections. It was clearly designed several decades ago when the Internet and computing in general was very different.

If you're using a dedicated server, SFTP should be pretty straightforward to enable. If there's already an SSH server, SFTP is almost certainly already running

Dear Dave,

I wish to complain about this new server of yours. Previously when I clicked on a link I would have several seconds to think about a reply or to go make a cup of tea while I waited for the screen to refresh. But now the screen updates instantly, leaving me no time at all to compose my thoughts. I can't take this, I'm getting all stressed out with the pressure of it all. Please slow it down again

My avatar never did return. A quick browse shows a lot of others are still missing. This being a DIY forum my best advice to anyone requiring an avatar refresh is to DIY.
