Is the display common anode or common cathode?
For common cathode http://www.extremeelectronics.co.in/pictutorials/images/SevenSegMux1.gif .
For common anode http://embedded-lab.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Lab11_Circuit_SevenSegmentMultiplexing.jpg .
In the program you simply turn on one of the digit and the desired segments, keep it on for some time then you turn it off and go to next digit, you do this fast enough that the human eye sees all the digits on.

Those displays are slightly different -> 24 pins for 3 digits, :)
