Dell Inspiron laptop: "My Dell" will not update
« on: March 03, 2022, 03:28:00 pm »
The "My Dell" app on my Inspiron tries to update but says there's an error and I have to terminate it.

The Dell techies have been very attentive.
I've been through every iteration of uninstalling/reinstalling and resetting (Windows11) the app even including the use of Revo but nothing works.

This has now become a bit of a "bee in my bonnet" so I was wondering if anyone had an idea about how I can proceed?

Thanks.

There is no secret that some sort of partners  conspiracy goes with some typical OS and brands.. mostly in notes and desktops kiosks too..

I did that countless times ... reflash the bios .. hope for the better w the new one..
 Reformat low level your hd
..

Install linux..

Solved 99% of these assholes products

there is some  program named  windows update mini tool   who could replace  the update system in win11,  im on win 11  and i can say  its  not perfect  on an asus system,  so   i find this normal,  if not     revert back to an win10 version

win11 is not prime

Good choice.  OEM stuff that auto-runs other than essential drivers is rarely beneficial, and can be actively harmful. e.g. see https://www.theregister.com/2021/06/25/dell_supportassist_biosconnect_vulns_rce/

I still (!)  have a couple of Intel machines around...

They are a F***  pain to maintain ...
It seems that every new "feature" and inside blocks are made to not be x86 retro-compatible any more.. breaking a lot of stuf.. (namely JRE, some DLLs and some LIBc codes)

I am sick of it. The so called remote exploitable firmware scares the shit out of me every time the UEFI boot takes more than 3 seconds looking for something..

I am wondering when I will ditch them..  :o

Running  very old 16 bits apps into an x64 machine ....  search google  ntvdm64 ....  my girlfriend has some custom made  win9x era and some vbasic programs, the programmer died without updating them :(

they work without an itch

BUT  i had to block  drivers updates ....  they scramble everything once i have everything configured   :--

**EVERYTHING** from that 9x era was made to be ditched per upgrade...

That was their agenda to fill their cash demands.. and they really filled it..  ???
with their re-license cash demand

I had a *ALOT* of that  VB garbabe and MFC garbage..

Gradually replaced everything with DELPHI -> LAZARUS (in case of  possible..)
ALL MY C TurboVision stuff  runs almost without a single change (apart CRT mode)

FPC TurboVsion for UNIX runs flawless ...

MFC was flushed in the toilet replaced with Gtk/Qt or Wx when suited..

Today I have a minor number of things left.. but 99% was really successful ported and ditched.
However  - I am still scary with Intel hiding more and more firmware stuff inside their gizmos.

Although AMD is better and safer.. things are trending a dark way ahead.. for x86

Nevertheless  firmware and drivers from these partners are still making life miserable even after all these years..  they dont change their minds..  no value for the money

It's nice when the dell update utility is working right w/ the os it's installed under, but ...

In OP's case, where possibly win11 and DUU aren't fully working right (gasp!), just go old school, visit the update page for your laptop, and choose the drivers/firmware you want to update yourself.

The Dell codes on the back of your laptop make it easy to go straight to the right page and check for drivers & firmware of all kinds.

Similar for an ASUS mobo, or anybody else's brand ...

Nothing wrong w/ installing linux, but there's also nothing wrong w/ windows ... just make either OS your own from the start. Install from scratch, dump all the bloatware, data-gathering bs, etc., and you'll have a tool that does what you need it to do.
