Given the high cost of hearing aids, this product is not as silly as you may think.
When it first came out it probably looked weird, but these days a lot of people use Bluetooth headsets so it would not look out of place.

The advertisement is terrible but the product is ok, i can see it being useful to some people.

if it's omnidirectional it is just going to amplify everything so the noises nearest you will just swamp the distant sounds. Seem pretty useless to me.

They used to sell such things to kids, for spying with. Advertised in many boys comics and such, Tandy/Radio shack had them.
