Thanks. Strangely enough I couldn't view your album unless I logged out of my Google account.

That is strange. I have them shared public. If everyone else has problems, I can find another home for them.

Its just Picasa web album which is easy to post. If you don't like flash try this:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=109721484330599851932&target=ALBUM&id=5556172867435670145&authkey=Gv1sRgCMnJtMbRk6yn1AE&feat=email

That should be just flat I think.

Yes. The scope had been very hard to move the trigger level (only moved up and very jerky). Then later it quit moving at all. Replacing the encoder got it moving up again. Replacing a diode under the encoder got it moving perfect again. The only downside is the new encoder has detents.

HOWEVER, I must applaud Rigol here. I wrote asking them what kind of encoder it was -- explained that the scope worked well enough I didn't want to send it in for service and I had already opened it up and broke the seal. They verified I had bought from a US distributor (I live in the US) and just sent me a new UI board. Naturally, it arrived 2 days after I fixed the scope. I haven't decided if I'm going to open the thing back up and replace the board or just hang on to it for now since I am actually in the middle of using the scope for something. But very nice service from Rigol.

It's great when companies don't just fob you off and and actually try to help out. Rigol did well here.

Congrats on fixing your scope yourself.

I'm surprised to be honest, but then judging by the encoder quality it sounds like a fixed part is better than another poor quality replacement. Can we have the encoder model please ? that way we can all get correct replacement when we need them

I don't have the real encoder model number. Its an ALPS. The replacement I used is: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?WT.z_header=search_go&lang=en&site=us&keywords=987-1195-ND&x=0&y=0

Fits perfect, but has detents.

what are detents ?

It's just a name given to a type of basic locking mechanism, It could be like a lug or dog tooth type thing which helps lock something in place or prevents movement.

Detents give a control the physical 'click' felt when turning the knob....also can be used to feel when a stereo balance knob (or fader) is in the center or neutral position..

The two scale knobs have detents. The 4 "little" knobs on the scope don't. Now my trigger level knob has detents unless I swap the board out.
