Is it possible to have something on this forum that allows members to "follow" a topic without needing to make a trite post on that topic?

I often see interesting topics here but then cannot find them again among all the new topics posted 24 hours later.

Scroll up near top or down near bottom of this thread body, look for a button labeled "NOTIFY", click it and confirm it.

This serves 2 purposes :

- You will get a notification if there is new post in this thread.
- Go to your Profile/Account Setting/Notifications, this subscribed thread will be listed in the list of subscriptions, that acts like a bookmark for your favorite threads, so no more searching.

Hope this helps.

I feel that the contest announcement has done damage to the quality of the forum by encouraging so many poor postings that have been done with the sole intention of getting above the five post threshold. For future contests could the entry criteria include a minimum membership period (say 6 months)?

That does seem to be the consensus of what people want. Unfortunately it would mean I'd get more hate mail than I already get  ;D
But it seems to be the only way to go I think. or else move the contest to a third party site, in which case the winner could be someone who's never made a single comment or contributed anything to either the youtube or forum communities.

Maybe just 30 days prior to the announcement of the contest wouldn't be as bad.
I've seen posters with very helpful post in their first month so not as alienating as 6 months.

IMHO the 5 post rule doesn't work well. But it's not too bad to change the rules. Looking at the graphs it just take a week to calm down.

The contests get loads of new members in. I bet some of them stick around and keep the place vivid. Doesn't that go away if you put in restrictions?

New members are always good. the inactive ones tend to disappear over time as the forum gets a regular clean up and those who have not posted in months and who have not visited are quietly deleted. Good to get a regular influx of new members ,and if only 1% become regular it is better for all of us.

I have only ever deleted accounts that have zero posts.

Hey, you made me post. I don't enter any contests and I'd rather just not post. I like the forum and when there'll be a thread I think I can contribute to, I sure as hell will. And now back in the shadows...

I cannot wait the new topics. "Which soldering iron do you recommend?"
"I've just pirated Altium, how do I rotate components"
"Trying to build a 1000V 300A 5uH electronic load any sugge"
Ok, I'm evil now. 8)

Intermezzo with some old Dave's remarks, watch the date  >:D :

I know it's a good thing...
But is it just me, or has the volume of posts increased a lot recently?
I now commonly see 3-4 pages of posts when I hit the Unread Posts link, and that's only after like an 8 hour sleep or something.
I couldn't keep up before reading all the posts, and now it's shifted from simply too hard, to impossible!  :o

Dave.
I hate forums, they are too addictive, they suck my life away! HELLLLLLLLLLP!

Dave.

Quarterly update, today also is the 5th anniversary of EEVBlog, congratulation Dave !

Chart comments :
  • New topics per day is reaching 50,  while 700 new posts per day is norm now. Who needs a life, right Dave ?  :-DD
  • Forum page view per day is hitting 200K ceiling.  :o

PS : Also the EEVBlog site is now utilizing CloudFlare to improve it's performance ->  Dave's announcement

I would be interested to see the relationship of new members to EEVblog reviews and teardowns.  While looking for a spectrum analyzer, I discovered EEVblog on YouTube and then made it over here to the forum.  The info was invaluable to me in making the decision to buy (Rigol DSA 815-TG), and more recently, to pick up an oscilloscope (Agilent DSOX 2022A).  In today's world of hands-off buying, seeing a competent review and following the various equipment threads makes all the difference.  Not being an Engineer, I was not immediately attracted to an engineering site, so the YouTube route got me started here (fortunately!).

In the short time that I have been a member, my knowledge has gone up exponentially!  It is the efforts of guys like Dave, Alan, Shariar and others posting easy to understand, FACTUAL items that make this a great place to learn.  So to the question - 'Is the Forum getting too popular?' - I think this only gets asked when the number of inane posts gets above the noise floor.  A little judicious forum moderation can usually keep this down to a nominal level.  In the mean time, those of us who are newer to the forum, and who are hobbyists tend to benefit a great deal even if it does feel like everyone and their cousin are joining.

Quarterly update, data up to 24th Jul.

Brief comments :

- Looks like there is a bit of cooling down at posting activities starting from April ? Maybe its time for new contest ?  :-DD
- View counts still climbing as usual.  :-+

Attached statistic chart below.

I love this analysis Bravo good job.
