Which Metcal tip for batter case solder lugs ?
« on: January 11, 2019, 04:59:43 pm »
Hi All,

I using a STTC-146 Metcal tip. Now the other day I was soldering a battery lug, and within 1-2 seconds the lug got wrapped inside the battery case.

One like this: http://www.batteryholders.com/part.php?pn=BCAAL&original=AA&override=AA

Guessing to much power. I hardly touched it |O

So, either my soldering skills suck (probably), but maybe its the wrong tip? Any tips?

Thanks!

The plastic in those cheap battery holders melts if just look at them in the wrong way. The secret is speed - make a decent mechanical connection between the wire and the lug, tin the soldering iron bit well and go in really fast with some fresh solder. Aim to make the joint in less than a second with minimum mechanical pressure.

If possible, get holders with wires pre-crimped.

P.S. As far as I can see, there is no 'correct' bit - the plastic just melts at a lower temperature than the solder.

Hi Gyro,

I thought there was to much power in the tip. I will give it a try.

Thanks!

My preferred metcal tip, and as has already been stated, speed is the key. Put some flux on the joint too.
