Microscope working area
« on: June 22, 2012, 09:43:20 pm »
Can you change the vertical working area on a microscope by changing the eyepieces ?

Dave on a recent video mentions that you can do that by putting a wideview objective lens, I would like to try the eyepiece approach.

Please comment.

David.

You can double the working distance by using a 0.5x Barlow lens, which goes in front of the objective lens.

Thanks guys.

I'm trying to get a 0.7x or 0.75x barrow lens.

I'm using a 0.7X Barlow lens and it's just barely enough distance to work with ( 5" or 13 cm ). Consider a 0.5x lens or find a store that lets you test the difference.

Can you tell the difference on the distance for the working area with and without the barlow lens ?

I was looking for a store that will let me test the lenses, but the one I visited few years ago is out of business, now everything is pretty much on the internet.

Yes, .5 will give you about 8 inches of work space (a good amount as it keeps your head at a distance where you won't get tired too easily and allows your hands to work at a natural position also).

No, that will only change your total magnification.
To change your working distance you have to change your primary lens (or modify it with a barlow lens).
0.5x barlow lens are available on ebay for almost every scope on the market.
