Watch out, there's AI about
« on: July 31, 2024, 08:01:05 pm »
Q: Does a non-contact DC voltage sensor exist?

A:
Yes, non-contact DC voltage sensors do exist. These sensors are also known as non-contact DC voltage detectors or non-contact DC voltage testers.

Non-contact DC voltage sensors work by detecting the electromagnetic field produced by a DC voltage. The sensor can detect the voltage without making direct contact with the electrical conductor or circuit.

There are several types of non-contact DC voltage sensors available, including capacitive sensors, magnetic sensors, and electrostatic field sensors. These sensors can be used for a variety of applications, such as detecting the presence of live electrical circuits, checking batteries and power supplies, and troubleshooting electronic devices.

It is important to note that non-contact voltage sensors should not be relied upon as the sole means of determining the presence or absence of voltage. They are intended to be used as a supplement to other voltage testing methods, such as a multimeter or a voltage detector with contact probes.

Answer includes a nice photo of a suggested tool: a Meco 27 Auto. Operating manual attached in case you weren't convinced.

LOL

But you could actually detect DC electric field with respect to earth, if you have earth connection available.

I'm not an AI, but it seems that it does, at least, I have one :)
It has a nicely looking mechanical chopper with rotating fins.
