Forward Bias on a P-N Junction?

When one forward biases a p-n junction into conduction, does the applied voltage overcome the diffusion or electrical potential at the junction interface?

My ill-infomred understanding is that it reduces the thickness of the depletion region - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depletion_region is most likely the Wikipedia page you are looking for.

Ok. So, its overcoming the built-in bias and aiding diffusion.
