Whats the difference
« on: December 09, 2019, 09:27:03 pm »
As the title says, whats the difference between these two capacitors,

https://www.rapidonline.com/kemet-r82dc3100aa50k-100nf-63v-5mm-polyester-box-capacitor-10-3260

Please don't say "one is SMD, the other is through hole", i know that already  :-DD I am more interested in why you would chose one over the other.

Many thanks in advance

Ian

X7R ceramic dielectric can have a quite large voltage coefficient of capacitance which limits it to decoupling applications.  This will also cause distortion in filters.

Metalized film is self healing while ceramic tends to fail with a short.
