Need m.2 male to USB breakout card/board
« on: August 13, 2024, 04:30:35 pm »
Hi. I know it's a weird request because I cannot find one easily.

The only one matches is this: https://www.zebax.com/index_files/page1270.htm
But $85 each is too expensive for what it is, also buying from a random site is not a good idea.

I just need an adapter, which one end is male m.2 (A+E or E or B key, which A+E is most wanted), the other end is the 4 pins of USB 2.0, it's okay if it expose more.

I've searched for a long time with no avail, anyone have a good source? Thanks.

Would fabbing your own at JLCPCB, PCBWay, et cetera, with gold fingers be out of the question?  1U ENIG 1.0mm thick plus gold fingers at JLCPCB would cost about $30 for 10 plus shipping.

EasyEDA has M.2 A+E card modules (schematic matching the pinout with the exception of reserved pins 59,61,65,67 having the PER and PET names swapped, and 2230-sized board) which would make it very easy to do.

You need to route pin 3 to D+; pin 5 to D-; pins 1, 7, 18, 33, 39, 45, 51, 57, 63, 69, 75 to GND; and obtain 5V USB from somewhere.  The M.2 A+E only has 3.3V available (on pins 2, 4, 72, 74).  You could easily add a Microchip USB251xB USB 2.0 hub to the card to extend the number of USB ports; see the PCB Layout Guide for USB251xB ic's.  JLCPCB even has USB2514B-AEZC-TR (4-port) in stock for assembly for $1.5 apiece, so you could have these fully made for you.

Otherwise, try adding "NGFF" to your search terms as an alias for M.2.  That way, you'll find stuff like the M.2 A+E USB 2.0 dual-port hub.  I am a bit suspicious about EMI and EMC noise from their 3.3V to 5V boost converters, though.

M.2 may or may not contain USB - on motherboards some m.2 slots designated for WiFi may have usb support for bluetooth part of wireless cards.

If your m.2 slots have at least one pci-e lane, it may be easier to just get a m.2 to pci-e x1 / pci-e x4 slot  and connect a low profile usb controller card to that pci-e slot.  You can use riser cables if needed.
