Hello. If you can go to Google images online and work out where the “AirPlay” icon would be, when you’ve swiped up for “Control Center” panel to appear, you could probably screen mirror to an Apple TV, or an Android (Fire TV, other device) running the Android app “AirScreen”, and then you’d be able to see what you’re doing.

I’ve done this many times, this isn’t speculation “ off the top of my head“ as you’ll often find online. If I haven’t tested something to the Nth degree, I don’t “recommend” it, as that’s what idiots do, and I want to help you, not inflate my ego 😁

Also a lightning to HDMI cable would work well, but I was offering the free option first of course.

All the best.

Was it backed up to iCloud or locally via iTunes? If so, it might be easiest to just find someone with a spare iPhone you can borrow to restore a backup to. You may even be able to create a new iTunes backup for this purpose.

A spare iPhone isn’t needed - there are quite a few iOS backup extractors/browsers available for download.

How about get a cheap replacement screen and replace it.
There's no point getting old if you don't have stories.

You can use an on-the-go cable and a keyboard/mouse to drive the display if you've lost all touchscreen ability.

This is iOS, not Android, you cannot do that :)

I know. Surprisingly, it even works on Apple! I don't know if they work simultaneously through a hub though, I've only ever used one or the other at a time.

There is one minor caveat with it though (because Apple). By default, when you plug a mouse in, the on-screen pointer isn't automatically activated. The mouse movement and clicks still work, but you have to "feel your way" around in the dark. To get a mouse pointer on the screen, you need to go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch and enable AssistiveTouch. From there, you can also enable Mouse Keys if you want to control the mouse with a keyboard instead.

I've personally used the first item (USB 2 version) with a keyboard just to give it a try. I would recommend the USB 3 version because it supports pass-through Lightning power. The USB 2 version has a very low power limit. The intended use case is to transfer photos from a self-powered digital camera via USB. I got it to work with one particular USB keyboard and one particular card reader, but my other devices draw too much power. You can connect it to a USB hub and try other USB peripherals.  I tried a USB hub on my monitor and a USB Ethernet adapter and it works.

I just tried keyboard and mouse operation again. On iOS 12.x (the final version for iPhone 6) the mouse did not work. The keyboard does work properly. On iOS 15.x, the mouse works as well. I think I had to toggle Accessibility/Touch/Assistive Touch on to make it work the first time. Afterwards, the mouse still works with Assistive Touch off. I can unplug and plug it again and the mouse still works.

However, there is a security setting under Touch ID & Passcode/USB Accessories. If USB Accessories is turned off, you can't connect any USB device while the phone is locked. This would prevent you from entering the passcode with a keyboard or mouse. I'm not sure of the default setting for USB Accessories.

To the original poster, charge up the phone, press the lock button and try the touchscreen. If you hear the clicks from the speaker from touching the touchscreen, you have a chance of recovering your photos. Try entering the passcode on the blank screen. If you have another iPhone of the same size, you can use it as a guide for where to tap on the screen.

If you get it unlocked, you can try connecting the Lightning to USB cable to your computer. You will get the Trust This Computer popup. If you can manage to the hit the Trust button, you will be connected via USB PTP and should be able to copy the photos off.

Even if an iPhone has USB accessories disabled, a very limited number are still allowed by the system (on purpose). This is precisely part of how we can use that to our advantage to access iPhones with an unknown password. There is a public article here which describes it in a broad sense: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/apple-usb-restricted-mode-bypassed,37428.html also: https://blog.elcomsoft.com/2020/05/iphone-usb-restricted-mode-workaround/

I can confirm these "vulnerabilities" (if you can call them that) are still present in the current iPhones and iOS version and are presumably by design.

Anyway, topic for another day.

I did simplify my explanation a bit, assuming that the original poster's phone has been broken for at least a few days.

I too found that if you've recently unlocked the iPhone, you can plug in a USB keyboard or mouse on the lock screen and use it to enter the passcode.

To simulate the one-hour timeout, I forced USB Restricted Mode by repeated failing the Touch ID fingerprint detection. This prompts for and requires the use of the passcode. If you plug in a USB keyboard or mouse at this point, a notification pops up telling you to unlock the iPhone before connecting a USB accessory. The keyboard or mouse does not work in this case.

To the original poster, I think this side discussion of USB keyboards and mice is not very helpful for solving your problem. If you are very lucky and Touch ID & Passcode/USB Accessories is turned on, you can unlock the the phone using a USB keyboard. However, you can't connect the iPhone to the computer at the same time. You would have to use an alternate method to back up the photos such as subscribing to iCloud and backing up the photos online. You could maybe enable a Bluetooth keyboard so you can use the USB for a data connection. But, I'm not sure if the keyboard is useful at all if accessibility features have not been turned on already.

If the touchscreen digitizer is completely broken, the most effective way to recover the photos would be to pay a data recovery service. They would connect a new screen to allow the entry of the passcode to allow full usage of the iPhone.

This can be bypassed with certain models of Apple lightning to USB/HDMI accessory cables. This is a common method we use to operate locked phones that are in BFU (Before First Unlock) mode that have faulty displays. Otherwise the next best solution would be to buy a cheap display online and replace it.

I'd have to check which model cable/adapter works, but I'm not back in the lab until next week. I believe it's this one, but don't quote me on it 100% at this stage: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/apple-lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter
