I have only just got this Ipad. My previous one was 10 years ago. This one was bought only because a specific app is IOS-only; I need such a limited-capability device like I need a hole in the head. The reason I am setting up the VPN on the Ipad is because "the tablet" has to be usable as an emergency backup for my phone and possibly a laptop.

The Ipad already runs fine with a Softether port 443 VPN to a Linux server. The PPTP VPN was needed to get a VPN connection to a specific other system. But as I posted I got it working using OpenVPN.

I've been using Android, on which "everything just works" :)

You must be the same "stevelup" I know from elsewhere... long time no see :)

Hi

Yes, it's me.

Glad you're sorted. If you want a universal solution perhaps for the future, do take a look at Zerotier. It's truly cross platform (pretty much all platforms and architectures) and very configurable. Tunnels through NAT, double NAT and even CGNAT without a problem.

...do take a look at Zerotier...

Or its competitor, Tailscale.
It uses Wireguard for the encryption - the company was actually started by the guy who created WireGuard.

Or good old Hamachi.

These may have an IOS client but the terminator is not anywhere useful.

So AIUI it is like any of the commercially available VPN services which are intended to conceal your IP.

Hmm, I don't think you get it.
Imagine you have a room full of computers, setup on your own little private network, network shares and whatever.
Zerotier/Tailscale/Hamachi/etc.. allow you to move those devices to anywhere on the planet (with a net connection) and still have them setup on your same little private network. Now, you could setup OpenVPN (or some other VPN) like that using a central server, but all traffic would have to go through that central server, which adds a delay. These new methods allow peer-peer for faster response (although one central rendezvous server is still required to share addresses/instigate udp hole punching or whatever).
