I'm not sure I would trust an OS pre installed by Dell, HP or Lenovo.

System76 does a good job at it and for good reasons, it's their primary activity. They don't sell anything else.
Apart from specialized companies like this, I would certainly never trust one of the major vendors (such as Dell, HP, etc those you mentioned and more) with a pre-installed Linux. You can be sure it would be pumped-full of added telemetry and other various crapshit.

Who cares, you wipe it clean and you install the distro of your choice.
The point is, these pc's are guaranteed to be compatibel with Linux and you don't pay for a windows (pro) license.

There is some risk of needing custom drivers which aren't widely available.

Maybe it doesn't occur in x86 machines, but it's a nightmare on ARM.
Chromebooks for example can run Linux, but the SoCs are sometimes only supported by forked kernels, and only for a few years.

I'm paranoid so I would at least do a search if anyone has actually succeeded in installing a mainstream distribution on such box.

Business/Enterprise class Dell and Lenovo machines should be compatible and have long term support. Lower end devices are more of a crapshoot.
