7 segment Nixie tube clock.
« on: March 18, 2023, 02:52:15 pm »
All I could think was "no. just.... no!" when I found this in a local store. Karlsson actually makes quite nice (analogue) clocks but they should best stick to that, I guess.
(As you would expect, the LEDs were multiplexed so that looks a bit weird on the picture)

The good NixieTM tubes had a cathode for each numeral, carefully stacked to minimize interference with each other, in a neon-filled glass envelope.
The trademark belongs to Burroughs, who later merged with Sperry to form Unisys.

Well, I don't really like the looks of it either with those LED displays, but to each their own.
Certainly it's cheaper to make than using Nixie tubes, and probably more durable as well.

Btw, even if these LEDs were real tubes, the clock would still look like crap.
This is now a matter of personal taste, but really this "just stick a few tubes in a block of wood" design is akin to those audiophile amplifiers with tubes exposed for the sole purpose of demonstration that it is a tube amp. Can't get more lame than this.

....akin to those audiophile amplifiers with tubes exposed for the sole purpose of demonstration that it is a tube amp.

To be fair, it isn't the sole purpose. Tubes dissipate power by thermal radiation, it works better to radiate that to the outside environment rather than heating the internals of the amp. It would be different it they were lower temperature devices that were mainly cooled by convection. I gennerally agree with the 'stuck in a block of wood bit though.
Best Regards, Chris
