While I was trying to find a particular datasheet of  an RCCB, I came across this catalogue (link below) which has a photograph of a distribution box in which they wired the RCCB incorrectly!

The Red Live wire is connected to the N (Neutral) terminal of the RCCB. Major Goof-up by Schneider Electric!!!!!!

There's actually a very good chance it doesn't care about the polarity - and they were at least consistent.

Pretty sure India's the only place they offer a hobbled Acti 9 range and feel the need to draw some wires on with Paint for people...

So which side is the switch on? Looks like it's neutral... Maybe they figured that live is the one to switch and painted it accordingly.

It's a double pole device..

You shall be more concerned about the thin red wire going from the RCB to the bus bar.

Also, typically, breakers are wired top to bottom, not bottom-top.  But either way - it doesn't care, neither does the RCB care about which side is the N and L.  Not sure why there is the N drawn at all.

And the thin black wire going to the neutral bus bar...

The rcd/gfci device doesn't care about polarity, it uses a common mode toroid with a few turns, and it's any imbalance of current between the conductors that actually triggers the tripping.

Be a little careful here, I have come across RCDs where they only tripped the live :wtf: (So NOT usable for isolation!).

Trashy design, sure and I don't think Schneider would go there, but when you encounter someones contractor supply house branded unit is is worth checking the markings.

Regards, Dan.

Haha, I'm not a big Schneider fan, they are nowhere near as good quality as Merlin-Gerin were.

That does sound especially crappy though, and I never believe anything is isolated until I've proved it, probably why I've only had 1 shock in around 40 years of mucking about with things that could kill me...

Oh yea, MG did nice stuff.
It seems that almost all of the manufacturers in this space have been borged by Eaton.
