VESANY Hidden Camera Detector
« on: May 01, 2020, 11:58:34 am »
I would not describe it as an outright SCAM but it probably comes close.

Especially the "GPS tracker" detection is obviously bogus as GPS relies on a passive receiver. And most trackers I know of do not transmit the whole time.
Also how you would want to detect unwanted transmitters in a normal flat with WiFi devices and mobile phones around is puzzling me a bit.

Most gps tracker don't even transmit anything, but store the location history in SD card...there's no way you can track them down. The only way to defeat them is to feed them with your own garbage signal, like the Taliban does. But then what if they're not using gps at all...You can easily make a tracker that uses google location api, which locates you using wifi around you.
And what if, it doesn't transmit until it detects movement? There are thousand ways to screw you when some big shot is behind you.

Plus, this thing is all over the Ebay already-
https://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.Xcamera+detector.TRS0&_nkw=camera+detector&_sacat=0

The biggest defense would be to literally put small shiny things, like chrome plated screws everywhere to confuse the person looking for camera...But who in their right mind would be so paranoid to look for a camera everywhere they go? ones you start to look for them, you'll get so many false positives that you'll stop looking for them and one will capture you when you least expect it.
But should you worry? No. since these cameras are likely to be so Shitty that your face won't be clear in the images.

Hidden cameras can be HD, what decade are you in, the 00s? It's basically the same chips that are in phones and laptop webcams. Look on youtube for recent hidden camera demos.

Likely. Right?
Also, I own an hd helmet cam which I never use, cause I could never get it to point in the exact direction that I wanted it to.
But the point remains, if the spy knows what he's doing, there's nothing you can do to stop him.
Let's take an example from the Kickstarter video itself.
Hiding a camera in AC ducting is more effective if you put a few shiney screws in, along with the camera.
You can have special mirrors that have cameras behind them
Hide a camera behind the TV's sensor window and have lots of decoy lenses in it, to make it look like a bugs eye like sensor.
Take advantage of the features, if you have waterproof camera etc etc

There's no product that can help you not get screwed, except for those which lights up the room with ir with the power of thousands of candles, so that everything is nothing but white to the camera.

Also, it's simpler to act like someone's watching than look around for a camera. Enact out a fake crime like fake murder, see if police comes after you afterwards. If they do, bingo.

I wonder if it could detect these:

https://ams.com/miniature-camera-modules

Anyway, if you believe you are being watched, the proper thing to do is, whilst in an empty room say "I know you are watching." randomly. If no one is watching then nothing interesting happens, if you are being watched then you've just freaked someone out.
Believe it or not, pointy haired people do exist!

Nope...I guess...To "detect" it, you have to know about it and expect it there. The detector is just a tinted glass and a bright red light.
But it's harmless with it's 249x250 pixel sensor

Also I was thinking that my multimeter's non contact voltage detector would do a better job at it, since it beeps near devices which are smps powered. Bring it near a phone charger cable while it's energized, it'll beep.
Won't beep for a battery powered object though.

I often wonder if the people putting up stuff like that believe in the product or if they are just outright scammers!

I don't think this is a scam. Optimizing the motor management has been a thing for decades, I guess this one just applies a modified generic profile. As most motors are artificially limited (due to emissions, need-to-run-in-all-climates, low fuel qualities in parts of the world and even product line considerations), there is a good 10-30% "easy power gain" from most modern turbo-charged diesel motors. This one seems to plug into motor managment, the scam devices plug into ODB (which won't work).

However, this device is at least illegal within the EU (which they should know, if they are from Italy) and certainly will void the warranty.
