"Hi-end" branded abomination power supply
« on: February 01, 2021, 06:08:52 pm »
This abomination of a power supply cost me 20 USD
Worst one I've ever got my hand on yet.
The Kapton tape below the circuit board was placed by me, There's no insulation below it out of the box.

I can't attach all images here, so here's the rest

EDIT: forgot to mention, AC input solder joint is about 1.3mm over the metal case, no insulation plastic sheet whatsoever.

Ah yes AC right next to 12V output, brilliant.
Is it actually using a TOP224C chip, those are not that cheap. Also the tab is connected electrically, and I'm not seeing any sort of proper insulation in place to prevent it making contact with the case.

Whoever designed it appears to have some knowledge but not much safety wise, do you think it is a Thai design?

Interestingly, they actually use TOP224
I don't have a proper macro lens, but here you go

There are nothing to prevent contact between AC join and case whatsoever.

For the country of origin, I am not so sure. They never mention it.

The black caps are AiSHi branded and the dark blue one is Elite branded.

At 20W I wonder if you would be better off with something like surplus wall wart supplies. Just that connecting to them might not be simple if you want it in an enclosure.
I would send you some quality 12V meanwell units but the shipping price is likely going to be too high.

No worries! I've got a Meanwell power supply.
at least I don't have to worry that it will burst into flame while I'm asleep.
