Hopefully (quite probably actually) they will reach the stretch goal and I'll get a TIC that has slightly higher resolution than the FLIR one (plus is US$100 cheaper and can communicate with a pc, not only a phone). A TIC for $243 inc. shipping to CZ is a STEAL!

Not really - that res is perfectly OK for a lot of TIC uses, more so when combined with a  video overlay.
Even without the hack, the E4 is still a very useful tool.
 
I think $200K is maybe a little high a target though. Unless I wonder if maybe  Heimann were demanding a high MOQ for the sensor.

Super-resolution is a technique that use many low resolution images to get high resolution image.

OpenCV supports it:


Since the module will have SPI pins accessible and sends out data through UDP stream, it shouldn't be to hard to implement super-resolution into software in pc or phone. I wouldn't mind having lower frame rate when inspecting electronics if thermal resolution would be double the original.

I am curious if this thermal imager for smartphones would be useful for electronic projects to look at thermal issues? Funny story about that Lena playboy image.... I recently took an online course in digital image processing, and the professor used the Lena image as an example.. then ensured a huge uproar over how inappropriate it was to use and one of the students posted a full hi-res pic of the entire Lena image. The professor had no idea the source of the original picture and was a bit embarrassed he was using that example for years without knowing its source. Learn somethun new each day

The Lena picture has been used and characterized so many times since as far as I can remember that it's not going away anytime soon.

It was around back in early 90's when I was involved in image processing, but apparently it's been used since the early 70s

If it weren't for the mu optics fiasco I think this would have a much better chance, but I think their target is maybe a bit high. Of course they could try again with a lower target.
It looks like they have support of a sensor manufacturer, so it's also possible that having seen the demand they will help them along to establish them in the market - they are a direct competitor to  Flir's Lepton, but I suspect once Flir have recovered the development cost, they have potential to drop the price of Lepton substantially due to lower manufacturing costs.

Looks like they got a really good discount on the sensor as the list price of the 64x62 array is $1018 on the US distributors website.

It's quite a bit larger than the Lepton so doesn't seem suited for smartphone applications:

Yes - th emuon is just the next in their line of high-spec cores, using the same sensor packaging tech as seen on the E4.  640x480at 60fps would be sweet!
