Scope Month 2017 Megathread
« on: January 24, 2017, 09:27:48 pm »
www.scopemonth.com

Lay it on me. Questions, comments, angry venting, etc. :)

-Daniel

Edits & FAQs:

1. "Why isn't country XYZ included?" - I really wish we could include every country on the planet, but in order to comply with local laws & regulations we simply cannot. We work with our legal team to make sure we include as many countries as possible while remaining compliant.

2. Unlike cyber week, you do NOT have to be affiliated with a company.

Oh, no, again? Why can't Keysight hold these events less frequently.
I'm just joking, I'm totally enjoying it  :-DD

So...do the entrants have to be affiliated with a company or not ?

Entrants do NOT have to be affiliated with a company!

We do our best to include as many countries as possible, but we do have to comply with local laws and regulations.

Glad to see scope month is back and incorporating feedback/learnings from last year. Hope it all goes well and that there may be additional types of test gear in the future (for this or other promo events).

I thank you for your answer... But I still think there is no real reason in our country legislature, except corporate lawyers being lazy to go into details of every little country that doesn't seem to have great market potential, and just playing it safe..  It would be nice though to be able to participate...

As I said, i do thank you for your answer...
Have a good one, Daniel!!

To what address should I post my "processing fee" Daniel?

This is to make sure my entry has the best possible chance of being picked... wink wink nudge nudge....

For the bigger scopes this year it will be a judged event and not community voted like last time.
Guess who's on the judging panel  ;D

I will accept an Alan Bean original painting as a bribe

Why Canadian and South African winners have to do a math test in order to claim the prize? Sounds ridiculous.

Not necessarily.

In NSW, as I understand you cannot legally conduct a raffle (random draw) without government approval (technically).  However, you can offer a competition of skill and when there are multiple winning entries, you are permitted to draw one of them at random to win the prize.

It was very common to have a
  G _ E _ S _ N G    C _ M P _ _ I T _ _ N
where you had to fill in the blanks.

Yes, it's the skill requirement. Welcome to the department of bureaucratic red tape where the seemingly ridiculous becomes law.

Oh, well that changes everything. If I could buy one of those, then I'd forgo the bribe and put the painting on my wall.  8)

I've seen the "math test" that they have to complete for Canada and South Africa, it's trivial. I don't know the specifics behind the legislation, but no one is failing that test.

It's probably going to be annoying to see people immediately selling their prize on eBay (or offering it on here) again. If I was doing this sort of giveaway I'd list the prizes as "on loan indefinitely" and keep them officially as remaining the manufacturer's property. That way they couldn't be sold for a quick profit at the expense of a potential winner who might actually use it. It might even get around the tax issues.

True, but not unique to this giveaway. However, selling the won item is a lot better than, for example, the guy who won a Lamborghini and crashed it just six hours later (no one was injured). :palm:

my sister had a working permit in canada last year, but that was from APRIL till NOVEMBER  :scared: :scared: :scared:

hope you'll be able to add italy to the contest too in the future.  :horse:

I know i can just wait for the usual german guy to win an sell immediately on ebay, as always, but still.. they resell them for brand new price.
not fair.
not fair.

Blame the countries and their ridiculous laws, not Keysight. I believe that is also the case with university (and public) employees, winning a contest and receiving a prize is considered as bribing or sth stupid :)

At least here is one lucky 2016 winner who still has the scope. Cannot say it hasn't crossed my mind to put it on eBay. After all, I could surely spend few thousands on something that has way more use than the scope - even though I am active hobbyist and do use it. But those are big money for most of us, I think many decide to sell them even if they had some use for it. After all, I decided to keep it as I dont urgently need money and at least I have a scope I could never buy. Should be enough scope for a hobbyist for very long time.

Maybe it could be even better to give away cheaper scopes that do not have so high reselling value but would still be a jackpot for most? And do we even know what is this model they are going to give away this time?

@blueskull I know you did buy one of the last year prizes.
Beating the :horse: again, but seeing that many people that win these contests just to resell the prize for near the retail price is depressing for people who can't afford these instruments, would put them to use but can't enter the competition.
It's not fair but the world is not fair. So what can i do about it?
1) Make my voice heard in these topics (with the knowledge that it would be just as effective as if i made a change dot org campaign :D :D )
2) Make more money (on it!)
3) Get a new job in another country (but i love my job)

(not putting the blame on keysight. i don't know the exact legislation of my country about constests but i think i got why they can't / don't want to make it here)

Anyway, good luck to the contenders!

I also bought one scope from a last years scope month winner (Germany) for a hugely reduced price (not on ebay) and I am very happy with it. So, it is not always a bad thing if a winner will sell his prize.

It would have pained me to win one of the 6000 series scopes on offer last year.  It's just way too much scope for my needs .... but if I were to score a 100MHz one, it will go with me to my grave.
