(Solved) Zoom conference invite link to a .exe...
« on: December 19, 2023, 04:25:05 pm »
Hi everyone,

I received a zoom meeting invite from a law firm.  However it happens to be a link to the law-firm's host with a huge file name of characters ending with a .exe.   Is this normal for zoom invites?  My PCs are old and run Win7,  I don't believe my virus definitions can be updated beyond 2020.  I just need to be safe....

Looks like a scam.

Do you know this law firm? Did you have any tele-conversation with them before? Do you expect any in the meantime?

You can check the email headers to see who the real sender is.

This is an approach taken by Webex and Zoom.  I think it's a terrible, terrible idea... but it is how they do it.  That doesn't preclude this being a virus, though, it could be legit... or it might not be.  (Which is why it is a terrible idea!)

One way you can be sure is if you download but do not open the file, you can check if the file is digitally signed by who you expect.  For instance, this is a recent Webex meeting file, it is signed by Cisco so I can be pretty sure it is legit unless Cisco's private key has been compromised (which would be a big deal!)

For instance, this is a recent Webex meeting file

So, you have the whole webex.exe in the "meeting file", right? Does it work in Linux?

Issue solved...
The link works without sending me a .exe on my laptop which already has Zoom installed on it.
