WSJ claims chip shortage over and we are in a oversupply now?
« on: November 08, 2022, 12:28:44 am »
Is this for real?  Are the smaller ICs and transistors used by cars easily available now?

I still cant get the FPGAs I want...
I dont care about the major CPU & GPU use in the premium computing products, what about all the regular size and scale ICs?

If the WSJ says so! :-DD

Oh yeah, we are clearly in oversupply. In fact, you know why? There is so much oversupply at the moment that they are gonna need to regulate that by limiting production in order to limit energy use. :-DD

It is absolutely not true. But WSJ is a tool to manipulate stocks, so it is fine.

It sounded weirdly focused on specific traits of the semiconductor sector, sort of like cherry picking data to prove a point of view knowing the general public will not realize the myopic and deceptive specifics.

I can't wait till the Economist tells us about chip shortage too.

This is actually a excellent piece of engineering, nefarious as it is. My hat's off to these creeps.

See how the commenters are already on the next step and complaining about, for example, how the awful, mean car manufactures (still) charging too much for their cars.

For some components the situation has definitely improved, but to say it is "over" is very much not the case.  We cannot buy Microsemi FPGAs right now, even if we are prepared to pay 10x the spot price.

You don't care about CPUs but their profit margin and volumes are high, so that is what they made.
Each AMD CPU cost what was it $50? and they can sell for $200-900+.

There may well be an oversupply of a few things, like AMD and Intel x86 chips. Just looking at NewEgg, lots of desktop CPUs are 30 to 50% off list price. You'll note, when you watch the video, those two companies are mentioned by name. The market for PC components started to turn several months ago.

There has also been a decline in demand for certain consumer products like smartphones and televisions, so there might be other categories where supply is opening up. But Intel and AMD are the biggest names in the industry, it makes sense for the mainstream press to focus on companies like that instead of Microchip and Infineon.

Obviously, there is still a shortage of many of electronic components. Companies like Microchip have many thousands of products, compared to a few hundred for a company like AMD. So even if manufacturing capacity exceeds demand, it will take months for every component Microchip makes to have normal inventory levels.

This thread is about WSJ claiming it's over and done with to a plural degree.

Did you read the article: https://www.wsj.com/articles/chip-makers-cut-costs-as-demand-slump-supplants-pandemics-chip-shortage-11667560050

They specifically call out intel, AMD, and qualcomm as being most affected.
And the title of the video is "computer chip industry faces glut" although you could argue what that actually means.
