This is the bit that made me think this might not be another 'maybe before I die' technology.

In addition to combining electrical and optical devices on a single chip, the new IBM technology can be produced on the front-end of a standard CMOS manufacturing line and requires no new or special tooling

Very cool, but I wonder how much the technology will cost. I have a bit of experience with optoelectronics and a good rule of thumb is that if it has the word "Photo" or "Optic" in it, its going to be expensive.
