Sagan's Cosmos getting a reboot (w/ Neil Degrasse Tyson)
« on: July 21, 2013, 08:13:47 pm »

The fact that it's Dr. Tyson and based on the original series by Carl Sagan is very hopeful.

The animated scenes, the "Transformers" style soundtrack, and the fact it's aired on FOX are a bit worrying though.

We shall see how it does.

I was hopeful, but my heart sank when I saw the trailer. They're going to ruin it, I promise you.

Seth MacFarlane's producing. He has shamelessly admitted to a cynical "give them whatever sells even if I don't like it" attitude (fits right in at FOX), and judging by the nerd ejaculations at the pop-sci websites and the needlessly flashy trailer, I'd say he's continued to do precisely that. What a shame.

I'm still hopeful, but the trailer is really disappointing.

+1...

However, to c4757p's comment: "'There's never been a more important time for Cosmos to re-emerge than right now. I want to make this so entertaining, and so flashy, and so exciting that people who have no interest in science will watch just because it's a spectacle' said MacFarlane." (source)

Let's see how it turns out.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Oh dear lord. So once again he openly admits to being the McDonalds of entertainment. :palm:

How sad. Hopefully the other people involved with this don't let him ruin it. There's so much potential here...

"I want to make this so entertaining, and so flashy, and so exciting that people who have no interest in science will watch just because it's a spectacle' said MacFarlane."

I can sort of see the point of this. There are a lot of people who may just not have realized something could be interesting because they've never seen it presented in an interesting way. But making it generically "flashy" isn't the right way to go about bringing those people in; it might bring them in for a little while, but it cheapens it so much for people who actually try to be engaged with it that it won't last long and they'll just bugger off. As will everybody else who otherwise would have watched it. And you're not going to draw in the "unwashed masses", so to speak, with tactics like this anyway, unless you plan on not making it educational at all.

It's such a pathetic, cynical way to view people that you could manipulate them into being interested in science by making it shiny, and it's a pathetic, cynical view of science that it needs that.
