I read the article and it looks as an assorted rant of an old dinosaur. What exactly is he complaining about? Shifting of engineering focus from analog first to digital and now to software? What's wrong with that?

Markets will just not accept as many competing hardware platforms in the same space as they used to. Just look at the gaming market. If you went into a shop to buy a gaming PC in the mid 80s just how many valid options did you have? You had more options based around just the 68000 than you have options for PC gaming, consoles, and handheld/mobile gaming combined now.
