When the dinosaurs ruled the planet
« on: July 01, 2011, 05:45:21 am »
Years ago when the dinosaurs ruled the planet, they were doodling in forums and message boards with art like this:

 _       __
 S------|  \
     +--|   >o----+-----Q
     |  |__/      |
     +----------| |
                | |
     +----------|-+
     |   __     |
     |--|  \    |       _
 _      |   >o--+-------Q
 R------|__/

or this:

              _____                   _____
             |     |                 |     |
             |    /|                 |\    |
             |   / |                 | \   |
             |  o  |                 |  o  |
          --(+)   (-)--           --(+)   (-)--
         |   |_____|   |         |   |_____|   |
         |             |         |             |
         |             |         |             |
         V             V         V             V
       --------->|---------    ---------|<---------

Ohh... I miss those days. Just a reminder to everyone, don't forget you can doodle instead of creating a wall of text to *spice* up your questions or replies.

Although it's interesting that after all these years, nobody seems to have come up with a nice, simple and quick way to quickly do sketches in online forums... how hard can it be?

I wish CAD packages had that so badly.

I wonder if there is an SMF add-in? That would be extremely useful.

You can still do it the old fashioned way, note the figure caption:

Code: [Select]
                                            ____

I don't like ASCII schematics because I find them hard to read and only reproduce well with a fixed width font.

All diagrams for dinosaur IBM mainframe computer logic circuits were in ASCII (or actually, being IBM EBCDIC) and were printed on listing paper by chain printers.

If I remember right they were called ALDs (Automated Logic Diagrams).

I agree. The complex arts are painful to look at. But the simple one are useful at times.

That AACircuit looks great for quickly sketching an idea for email etc without needing to fire up a proper CAD package, generate a PDF attachment etc.

As for fixed sized fonts, being mostly code centric these days, I find it a pain when things are proportional and not fixed.
On the forum fixed size is easy to dial up with the [ code ] [ /code ] block. (extra spaces to avoid invoking the fixed sized block)

dinasours died face it. i like dinasours, but now i have scanner (and png format!), so i can put my "older style" of sketch online, ie carbon (pencil) on paper. pls, dont argue carbon causes cancer, i know that!

I think pencils use graphite, although I am not completely sure since we call them "carbon pencils" in spanish. Weird, I know.
Quote
"Most pencil cores are made of graphite mixed with a clay binder, leaving grey or black marks that can be easily erased. Graphite pencils are used for both writing and drawing"

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, something very alarming, since pencils are used by young kids:
Quote
Indelible pencils were the cause of significant health risks due to the presence of aniline dyes. Exposure to aniline dyes could lead to eczema, acne and carcinoma. Penetration of the pencil lead into the body commonly leads to severe and debilitating effects such as fever, anaemia, elevated white cell count, gastro-intestical upset, kidney and liver damage, anorexia and necrosis of the tissue surrounding the wound. Such risks are not associated with ordinary graphite pencils. While these symptoms may appear after a couple of days they often develop only after weeks have passed since the injury was sustained. Surgery is required to remove the lead and the infected tissue and "the necrotizing action may be so severe and extensive amputation is necessary"

Graphite used to make pencils is just an allotrope of carbon and is not carcinogenic. Pencils used to be made of lead which is carcinogenic.

The beauty of plain text schematics is that ASCII text is always recognisable - once you get past the fixed font criteria.

All the modern graphic variants require some form of GUI display to render them, and as history has shown time and time again these formats come and go and someone always tries to push another one onto the market, or as Microsoft is keen to to add features that make the file unusable on earlier versions.

.PDF is probably the most reliable in ensure the page is presented as intended, but even then the earliest readers would not be able to open a new PDF file  :'(

Plain ASCII - well you could probably squirt that to an ASR33 teleprinter and still be able to read it fine!

Dinosaur bones last quite some time in the ground!

A plain PNG file can be read by most browsers and if it's monochrome 1-bit per pixel, it will load quickly, even on a dialup connection.

I am not into complex ascii schematics, but simple ascii doodles are rather useful.

Images have there place. Anyway, I uploaded a video on youtube to show how ascii art could be useful at times. This came from my defunct flashcard website which I took offline and still develop for my personal use. If I went and draw the individual gates, I would have 24 images to maintain. But using ascii art, I stored the whole thing in one text file except for the background images.

This is the reason why I got interested in ascii art. Anyways, I hope nonbody flag this as being indecent. It's art!  :-\

--edit--
In this way, a 24 png files would be considered larger than one text file.

Dinosaurs are not extinct, that many of their genes lived on in birds, avians.  The dinosaurs are still among us in birds.  The large dinosaurs lived during the Mesozoic in the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous onto the Cenozoic at the Paleocene, before all died.  Different dinosaurs appeared and disappeared at different times from the Mesozoic 250 million years to the Paleocene at Cenozoic 65 million years.  If you ate a chicken or turkey, then you ate a dinosaur related animal by features and genes.  Archaeopteryx is a bird like dinosaur that fossil remains were found in  limestone quarries in Germany.

yea right. you may as well call yourself platypus. dinasours are big. birds are not dinasours! except if you want to say every living thing with carbon binding in it is dinasour.

You're showing your ignorance again.

Not all dinosaurs were large animals, some were smaller than mice, the range in sizes wast as great as in modern mammals.

There is very strong evidence that birds are the direct descendants of dinosaurs. Fossils have been found which share many skeletal traits of dinosaurs but with imprints feathers feathers in the clay.

maybe you are right. we still live side by side with dinasours. and we are maybe alot more ahead descendant of them... after ape.

The ape, mammels and us humans are not descended from dinosaurs. We share a common ancestor with birds about 260 million years ago (if I remember rightly), long before the age of the dinosaurs.
