Fundamentals Friday on Noise/EMI
« on: May 29, 2015, 04:21:53 pm »
I know this is a tall order and a very extensive subject, but I think Noise coupling and EMI would make a great topic for a Fundamentals Friday. In the past I have resolved to Ott's book but it would be fun to see Dave doing a vĂdeo about it. Questions like:

> What is common-mode noise?
> What is differential-mode noise?
> What is thermal noise?
> What other kinds of noise are there?
> What are the most typical coupling mechanisms?
> How does common-mode to differential-mode conversion work?
> What is the difference between earth, chassis and ground?
> How do you model noise coupling phenomena using equivalent circuits?
> How do you mitigate noise in particular cases? How circuit models help find a solution?
> How can board interconects can pickup noise and what are good interconnection practices?

Cheers!

There was at least one video answering most of your questions. Search for it. Probably the one where Dave got the blue E-field and H-field probes as a gift - and all related videos to that.

I saw that video, the one on EMC precompliance and the one on tracking common mode noise. I'll watch them again just to be sure but I don't remember my questions being answered there, specially on the mailbag one.
