I want to believe they meant to type $4 instead of $40. But then again who buys jellybean parts on ebay.

It's 40 cents on DigiKey. May be seller meant cents.

Item is out of stock. Seller avoids relisting fees. This has been discussed many times.

This is very popular with sellers offering lots of cheap items. It will take then hundreds of sales to recoup listing fees otherwise.

Ah right, so they list at the proper price when they have it and crazy prices when out of stock and back to proper prices when back in stock? They know all the tricks!  :)

Sometimes, even usually, but not always. There are some vendors who just work on the basis of their customers being fools and use ebay as a sideline, listing stuff on ebay at their normal list price. Take a look at this vendor (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NATIONAL-SEMICONDUCTOR-LM324N-RQANS2-LM324N/391966977628?hash=item5b430d6e5c:g:WboAAOSwO~VaZp-j) and you'll see that they list lots of jellybean parts at crazy prices and none at a sensible price.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

Try THIS one on for size ...... https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jbl-srx-systems/112772075283
There is a money back guarantee, so it says on the page.
Who’s going to be the first to try that out?

Can you actually believe this???
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LM324D-Quad-Op-Amp-SOIC14/152727785629?hash=item238f49109d:g:3poAAOSw-9xZ0ykh
Unbelievable.
There must be others.
On my wall at work, I have an eBay auction from long ago for two "Les Paul" oil-paper capacitors.  Total price $150, so $75 for each capacitor.
These were USED parts, salvaged from (presumably) a guitar amp.
