Yes, and the design of the test pit was for safety.  The only missing item is that they should be on a hill top throwing down so grenades can't bounce back as it did.  But in use, HH grenades are used in level ground, so an excuse can be made for doing it as was.

I almost did the same during my national service. Practice throw with non-lethal grenade went fine, but the real thing sort of barely made it over the edge of the trench me and the instructor were standing in.

That was my impression too.  I'm not sure he needed to do what he did (given that the grenade was down in the pit, and the trainee was flat on the ground), but it was certainly a good decision anyway.  I wonder if that means that this is a common problem?

I think he would have been OK if he was on top of the little pyramid but the drill instructor probably saved his ears some permanent damage.
It does look very impressive though.

Hand grenades usually mean to kill you with fragmentation, the amount of explosive in them is too small to cause concussive injuries when they are in that trench.
The instructor was probably worried that his leg/arm was overhanging into the area above the grenade so he pulled on him.

Flashbangs are concussion mostly, with little fragments. Meant to incapacitate you by blast pressure mostly. not exactly good to be near when it goes off.
