It's usually a small tin with a ring pull which contains a quantity of cannabis.

Sometimes it's used as a term to describe a standard fix for something, maybe a software bug or a known cure for fixing that hardware fault that occurs on a particular model of something.

Sometimes it means a fix to a problem that simply involves buying something ready made off the shelf.
Reference to buying a can of food.

eg, "John keeps using the soldering iron when i need it, time for a canned fix, second iron ordered"

Greek letter 'Psi' (not Pounds per Square Inch)

Often used in connection with power supply rebuild kits consisting of uprated components and capacitors. Very common in the Satellite receiver industry. No diagnostics needed, you just replace ALL the components that may be faulty. Fast and efficient for the customer but not as fulfilling for the keen tech. I always like to know what failed  ;)

I would expect a sort of all-inclusive repair for a particular (common) problem.  For example, those iPhone screen replacement kits that come with spudgers, suction cups, and the other "special" tools, plus instructions, needed to effect the repair, in addition to the screen itself.   Or the "ink jet refill" kits that include a syringe, drill,  and magic chip on a pcb in addition to ink.  Or a SW virus removal tool.

Specifically, analogous to the difficulty of preparing canned food, vs cooking "from scratch."

In HVAC, it is a canned product (leak stop or whatever) that "fixes" the problem without really fixing it.

As I have heard the term used, it generally refers to a "prescribed fix" for a known problem that does not require additional troubleshooting or diagnosis effort. Someone else has solved the problem, and it occurs frequently enough that there is now a "standard" solution for it. The "canned fix" is the documented series of steps (possibly including replacement hardware parts) used to resolve that specific problem.

Yep, canned fix. For problem xyz : replace all these parts , or replace this board. Done. These are repair instructions for frequent problems where someone made a kit woth instructions what to do. No need to think. Simply follow the instructions and it will work. Most of these things are more economical (even though you may be replacing non defective parts in the process) as you save the time required for troubleshooting it at component level.

Ha. Are you just making that up as a joke, or is it a thing?

Sure! Around here, the canned fix of choice, rather than cannabis, is methamphetamine, which you can pick up at your friendly neighborhood Walmart1.

Haha I saw a video of how to make it out of curiosity one time.  They use sulphuric acid litium from batteries and ether...  why anyone thinks that it is remotely a good idea is beyond me.

Because stupid.

For just about every drug out there I can name at least one person I know who's done it and is otherwise a reasonably intelligent person. Meth? Not a chance. I live in an area with a big meth problem, so finding meth-heads isn't hard, too. Not a single one of them was ever intelligent once. You're lucky if you can find one who can spell his name.

Actually you can get pretty close sold at walmart:

Yeah, but those don't have the delicious battery acid. That's the best part!

Sorry! :-[

No problem, it just became pretty OT...  ;)

Im sorry that you got those problems over there. Last time i was in Phily, i was shocked how  bad the town had become. Very much poor people, and very much drug abuse. So sad.

We're not Philly bad..... yet. Just a small, sad, former manufacturing town nestled between two highways with major drug routes.

I'll try to stop derailing threads so much.... :-DD
