Special solder for removing ICs
« on: Yesterday at 02:51:26 am »
What is the name, or more specifically - what will get a hit on Ebay
for a special type of solder for removing components such as ICs.
It has a long plastic phase, so you flood the component with it and remove before the solder hardens.

Are you thinking of ChipQuik?  It has a low melting temperature which means it stays liquid longer.

Low temperature solder commonly has a high Bismuth content, like Chip Quik.

Yesss Chip Quick, that's the name of it.
But man it ain't cheap.
Seems to be US made, and the listings don't mention shipping to Australia,
which more than likely will cost more that the product itself.
Think I'll give it a miss for now.

You can look for generic no-name versions of that type of solder. It's Sn42/Bi58, melting point 138°C (280 F) is the commonly stated spec. Take a look at Ebay, Aliexpress etc., and you should find cheap options with affordable shipping.

The trick is to know what to search with: Sn42/Bi58
I found some cheaper clone stuff.
They all seem to be in paste form.
Anyway I ordered some and will see how good it is.
Thanks for the tip.

Chip Quick also make normal solder. Don't make the mistake of thinking Chip Quick = low temp solder.
If it's low temp solder it will say low temp, or it will say a temp of around 140°C.
Normal solder is above 180C.

Mektronics in Sydney stock the small chipquick SMD removal kit, $36.08.
Expensive depends on the value of the device being repaired I guess.
The odd multimeter or 2 or 3 or 4...or........can't remember !.

It's about $20 on Digikey, I'd shop around.

It's worth noting that if you search for "Chip Quick" you will limit your results.  The actual name is spelled "ChipQuik".
