Random Loops/Echo on YouTube lately.
« on: January 25, 2014, 09:19:41 am »
Has anyone else noticed there seems to be a glitch in YouTube that causes random parts of a video to repeat?

Regards

LOL!! That's a good one!

Seriously though, yes I notice the same problem. It's not really random for me however, it's always near the beginning. The video would start at a lower than optimal resultion. Then the picture would freeze and the audio loops back a bit. As soon as the audio catches up with the frozen frame, things resume to normal, and at a higher resolution. It's slightly annoying, and I'm assuming (and hoping) that they will fix it eventually.

Noticed the same thing too, the video freezing but the audio continuing near the beginning. I also noticed several YT vids including Our Dave's are playing funny, like half the frame briefly out of sync with the rest of the video producing a kind of folding effect?

I think that is Google punishing us Google+ refuseniks? Or is it time for yet another bloody update?

Always happens when I switch to full screen, picture freezes, audio skips backwards a few seconds and plays through until it catches the frozen video and they resync.  I think it's to do with switching video resolutions when it goes full screen.

It also is having problems if you use the time slider to skip forward. Sometimes it refuses to do so and moves back to where it was on it's own, other times it will move but fail to begin playing again from the new time point.

I've seen that, but I've also seen a problem where the video will just skip backwards a few seconds and repeat a section for no apparent reason. Once this happens, it will keep happening periodically until I refresh the web page. I started seeing this about a week ago.

youtube is usually always a bit buggy in playback, i atribute it to problems downloading/streamg teh info.

however, i had noticed that when i go to another video i click in the sidebar, when the new page loads and the new video starts, the audio from the previous video would repeat over it.

this was going on for a week or 2, but i havent noticed it in the last week, so i assumed it was fixed.

As noted above, there is a definite "feature" right now on changing video resolution, either automatically or manually, especially near the start of a video.

The audio stream continues and the picture freezes while it tries to lock onto a higher resolution video stream. If it succeeds it jumps back to the point in the timeline where the picture froze and starts over at the new resolution, repeating the audio as needed.

I have seen this behavior start about roughly 1 month ago or so.  As others have said it does correlate to changing video resolution (regardless of intentional or automatic change).

Youtube has been going down hill lately frankly, even the player code has gotten crazy unstable on some linux setups when it used to not be so bad.

it happens when the resolution gets switched.

The video starts at lower resolution / bitrate and if the flash player detects you have the bandwidth you get switched to higher/bitrate resolution but the two streams have different keyframes (places where a player can seek fast to, usually every 5-10 seconds) - so you get a desync of a few seconds until a keyframe is reached and the player can synchronize video and audio.

They'll probably tweak this next weeks.

We're talking about two different things here - I've seen both happen.

1. Audio & video get out of sync. Video freezes until audio catches up.

2. (This sounds more like what PeterG is talking about) The whole thing just suddenly skips backwards and repeats a few seconds. Audio & video are in sync at all times. I've only seen it a few times, but once it happens it recurs periodically until I refresh.

I've only noticed it in the last couple of days.  I figured it was just a general firefox/noscript/adaware/flash/plugins/crap computer compatibility error. I have it rigged so most webpages display as text on white.  I also noticed, about 10 minutes ago, that I can "thumbs up" videos again.  That button hadn't worked on my end for a couple of months.

But what do you expect?  With Google running the show, I'm sure YouTube is technically in beta.
