Farnell Leeds trade counter to close
« on: August 03, 2016, 11:19:34 am »
August 31st. As someone who spends a lot of time in Leeds, this is frustrating. It's one of the easiest places to get parts from in a flash.

According to a friend of mine who works at Farnell, it is profitable, but the company wants to move focus to be an exclusively online business and it's not worth focusing management effort on it.

At least we still have the RS trade counter.

RS trade counter by me ( 20km away) closed years ago. Was a pity, as I could simply call Darren there, and order whatever I wanted, before 1PM, and collect it the next morning after 10 if he did not have it off the shelf direct. But location and cost of the shop was what killed it.

The Farnell Trade Counter was a superb well run facility ran by a very customer focused commercial manager which was a credit to Farnell - I've been a customer for over 3 years and I am sad that this great facility has been taken away, I will struggle to meet my current business requirements with the procedures that are to replace the trade counter

I only hope that Avnet take a more customer focussed approach.
My one experience of avnet was place order, get email confirmation stating delivery, two days later browse website and notice by chance that the delivery had slipped to four months.

Not a happy bunny.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".

Only if you are a large customer. IME Arrow is a bit more "small-customer" friendly than Avnet, not only by direct interaction with them, but also with the quality of Avnet's online ordering system/website.

If there is one thing that Avnet will improve at Farnell is packaging. Farnell has sent me messed packages more than once to me.

Unfortunately the "same great service" has not materialised - over the past 6 days 4 orders have failed to be delivered next day - hugely frustrating

In Hong Kong there was a farnell counter in Kwun Tong which was very easy and convenient for customer. After they change name to element, they move to a new place, and the good service disappeared. I haven't bought from farnell for a long time and switch to purchase from mouser instead because of their better selection of products.

In general: if you need a wide variety of parts there is no way you can do with just one supplier. I order parts from a whole bunch of suppliers (including Farnell, RS and Mouser) because non of them have all (variety and not quantity) the parts I need.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

That is true, although you start biasing your part selection towards the availability of the best distributors. You will surely never be able to get your entire BOM from your preferred source, but at least they end up getting the "filet mignon". :)
