EEBlog and forum slower and slower
« on: July 11, 2014, 11:55:49 am »
In the last few monts I noticed the EEV blog loading slower and slower.

I have 120Mb internet so usually Dave appeared within a few seconds.

But then it would take some more time somtimes up to 15 seconds.

Now I have installed Ghostery, a tool that analyses and blocks trackers and analysers.
It found up to 15 tracker analysing my data before loading the page.

I have blocked them all and now Dave pops up in seconds.

Anyoune else had this experience?
Why spend money I don't have on things I don't need to impress people I don't like?

I did notice yesterday that accessing the site was extremely slow around mid-afternoon central time.  I had it white listed in Ghostery, so I took the site out of the white list and it worked fine.  Must have been one of the tracker sites having problems.

Three steps to a faster, less annoying and almost ad free internet (requires compatible browser).

1. NoScript
2. Ghostery
3. Comprehensive Hosts file

Firefox and Adblock-plus are good at keeping the advertisements out and thus keeping websites quick to load and more important: readable.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Yes, that's common. All those trackers and analytic tools are off-site, i.e. located on other servers around the globe. If some line of your ISP is congested or a server overloaded the webpage loads slowly. And if an ad server is down the webpage might even fail to load. That's the downside of linking other sites, and as more you link as higher the probability of problems becomes.

AdBlock Plus always ON.

Fast loading always.  :-+

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, however, there is.

Not to mention that several servers which serve the ads have been spreading malware several times. Keeping advertisements out is also a good security measure.

Good for you. But there are more Ad elements than electronics related content from Dave.
It is absolute pita to load this side without adblock plugins. I can understand he wants to earn money, but when this ad's are overwhelming more and more people use such adblock plugins and the effect becomes negative.

I have Adblock Plus disabled here as well.  I only ever see ads at the top of the page and don't recall seeing anything not related to electronics.

That dating ad you linked is an adsense ad. I have no control over what is displayed there.

When subscribing to Adsense did you tick the box 'my website is mostly visited by nerds'?  :-DD  :-DD
I do acknowledge advertisements are necessary for a website like this to pay for itself. OTOH having too much non related advertisements makes people use add blockers. I have seen other forums use their own advertisement system where they use ads from sponsors. That keeps the advertisements more on-topic and less intrusive.

Well that's the trick. I have the choice to either use adsense or not use adsense.
I get few complaints from anyone about it, so I use adsense, so it seems worthwhile based on a complaint/income ratio.
Also, I get a large click-through ratio, which means the ads must be relevant to a lot of people.

I rather get the singles one, but they are all about boring electronics.

I donate. How people use the internet with ads is beyond me. Maybe I just never picked up the skill.
