Twitter now requires login to browse tweets.
« on: June 30, 2023, 06:29:58 am »
On a guest machine, while it was doing it's update shenanigans, thought I'd surf to a couple of twitter accounts to get the latest.

Redirected to twitter login.

I know Elon is a serial fuckwit but this is Zuck-level stupid.

LOL, for real. It was not the case just this morning.

They will change it back. Once people realize majority of people can't read their stuff, they will stop posing.

The only thing I read twitter for is insane stupidity of NFT people though web3isgoinggreat, which mostly links to twitter threads.

Twitter is trying to commit suicide.  Or maybe murder-suicide.  How's Musk doing at  the moment?

Reddit has been terrible in the past 2 years. Sometimes I just want to read the general opinion about something, without them tracking me. So forget about it on mobile, it will ask you to log in most of the time. They made the browsing experience terrible, where you literrally need to click every time to load new comments. And then do you want to click on a website in the mobile browser? Forces you to use their browser, no way to see the link address, no way to forward it. :-- :palm:
All these companies are doing is profiling. They are setting up your psychological profile for nefarious purposes. A study showed that after looking at 50-100 of your likes on facebook, an AI could predict your opinion better than your spouse.

OK, I guess I won't use Twitter then.

Why? Twitter is the webpage that makes the most sense to have an account on, since there are no threads or topics but mixed user tweets, so it is useful to have an account that follows the users you are interested in.
Also besides showing the users you follow it has "recommended for you" posts which may increase the users with related topics you follow.

I'm fine with needing to log in to tweet.
I don't need the tweets personalised to me and I don't want to be required to log in to just read one tweet I've been linked to.

I wonder if a closed/private club would still need to comply the laws regarding public websites and public services.  If not, would worth making the content visible to logged in members only, so people inside the platform can talk freely, without all the various censorship laws from various countries.

Especially in regards to politicians and other government departments that use it as a public service.
Don't the public have a right to see those posts directly without logging in?

If all the use you make of twitter is reading some linked tweets someone sends, then who cares, you are not a twitter user. And there is no need to post anything to be one.
What I'm saying is that twitter cannot be compared to eevblog or a manufacturers webpage or even a newspaper. It's content is organised by users whose names (@whatever) are like codes that you cannot remember, so
it nice to have an account to store this information for you.

No idea how it is used now, or by whom, I don't have twitter.

It was just a wild guess, that if Twitter would be turned into a private club, then they can't be forced to censorship.  Otherwise why they would make it visible only to logged in people?

No mater the reason, if Twitter plans to remain visible for login only, then the politicians would need to find another public platform for their propaganda, I guess.  :-//

But it's been that way since inception, and countless people post links that are now hidden unless you have an account.

Agreed and I'm not defending their move, my point is that it is worth it to have an account with them if you are going to read it even from time to time and regardless of the topics you may be interested in.

You sound like you are defending their move... Regardless, the whole model of twitter is advertisement - they have potentially lost me and many others as people who would have viewed ads.

(I have an ad blocker, but I don't think the policy extends to only people using ad blockers.)

Not surprised at all! Twitter already limits reading tweets without login for a few years. You could only see the latest tweets before a pop-up tells you to log in.

PS: I don't have a Twitter account and I'm totally happy about this. ;D

Regarding Reddit: use old.reddit.com
That interface is not really mobile friendly, but it will not nag you to use the app. If you actually do login (you can create a Reddit account on old.reddit.com *without* an Email Address, just skip that question) you can also force the old layout. Otherwise you might get nagged when opening reddit hosted images.

The new reddit also started to hide some features, like sorting in threads, behind the login. Also, anything marked NSFW, which is not just porn, requires a login. Or old.reddit.com.

Headlines from August 2021: "Twitter starts to require login to view tweets"

What did/does that have to do with Elon ?

Some time ago, you could read some tweets and after ~5 tweets you were asked for a login to continue reading.

Now, you are required to login to read any tweet.

Also besides showing the users you follow it has "recommended for you" posts which may increase the users with related topics you follow.

That is the main problem for me: i do not want biased information - even if it is *my* bias. I want neutral information or the information I am looking for.

If Twitter has my profile and knows my preferences, it will suggest information with I tend to agree - or even worst - information that I hate to generate buzz and discussion.

The fact that social media choses are you are reading, from my point of view, generate polarization and hate speech. Thus, a neutral reading without a predefined profile is best.

Everything wants an account and login to do anything now, the one that shocked me the other day was McMaster-Carr, that easily halved my opinion of that company. Just the state of the internet these days, the usual race to the bottom BS.
