How to pass on the torch (SOLVED) ?
« on: May 17, 2017, 03:48:27 am »
Hi everyone

One thing I am very proud of is my list of Electronic Youtubers:

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/other-blog-specific/dd/msg1093983/#msg1093983

(notice the "dd" in address - it was an accident that I made the first post ha ha ha  I was just playing around and hit Reply instead of Preview and Dave saw it.  And as they say - the rest is history)

I am getting up in years (68) and last Feb I had a heart attack that just reminded me of things to come.  I am fine now and I am in better health than before.

I have spent many hours on the list and I am honored and wish to continue to maintain the list BUT how can I pass the torch especially if I will not have the ability to let the mods know of my death?  I have a niece who will get my houses but I think she will be too busy counting the dollars than a list.

Second part of question:

I am having a problem with the HTML editing code.  I cannot make changes to the list because it is too hard now.  See my messages under that topic.

Any ideas on passing the torch and fixing the HTML problem?

Thanks

PS It has been honor to be a member of this forum.

First, thanks for your contributions including curating that list.  :-+

I'm active on several forums and have instructions for my family on how to handle notifications to each of those forum communities (for most forums, it's to remain silent and just update the profile; on a few where I'm very active, it's to post a public thread). My dad has the same situation; hopefully, it's decades away for all of us, but you never know...

I would put a short instruction list with your other final papers and ask your executor or delegate to handle it. Don't get it tied up with the actual legal documents; just a random, related note.

Are you actually old enough to consider that within the next year or so you are going to die?

I mean, sorry if I am being insensitive here, but unless you have a terminal illness and 6 months to live, I don't see why this needs to be a thing.

Yeah, shit can happen at any time, but really? I doubt this forum will even be here in 10 years time (No offense, but I think few people do too)

I guess it is nice to have everything taken care of, but I still think this is a bit strange.

Anyways to answer the questions, since the list is significant enough on this forum, maybe ask Dave or another mod/admin to give the list to another person after 6-12 months of inactivity on your part? I mean you could also just do what sokoloff said and have people contact someone here in event of death.

Also another note, maybe you should add Jamie Mantzel to the list? He's not primarily an electronics channel, but neither is Khan Academy (At least I don't think so). Even still he is an AWESOME YouTuber and people should check him out. His philosophical views are a bit stupid, but he's a guy, living on an island in Panama, building stuff. It's as cool as it gets. He even spent years building a giant robot out of scrap aluminium.
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

Heavens no, I am ok.

I have asked before if someone can edit the list and the answer was no.  I am starting to think that there is some technical problem with the editor that is preventing me from editing it.

My idea today is move it to an external cloud.  I do not know how these work but if 2 or 3 people can edit it, then this may be the solution.

So I will ask another question.

If someone notices it isn't updated anymore and they think it should they'll probably try to let you know. If you don't answer AND they really care enough about it they'll copy/paste the list somewhere else and complete it. If not it'll stay as is, that is your thing and pride but like anything that matters to someone it may not be anyone else's thing.
I spend a lot of time on things that matter to me, but I doubt anyone else in this world would be interested in spending their time doing those things. So be it.

Note that the number of people who use/enjoy/thank/kudos your work is absolutely not equal to the number of people who are anywhere near willing to put in the effort to maintain it. Maybe 10000 to 1.

THANKS

You came up with the solution.  I will add a footnote to the list stating that if the list is not updated in 60 days then try and contact me and if that fails contact a moderator and have them assign it to someone else  :-+  :-+ :-+  So simple I am ashamed I did not come up with it.  :palm:

Now to the HTML problem.  I think I have found out how to correct it (if the corrections stay).  Adding CRs to the code seems to work (before there was one, now there are none, and now I want to add two).  Now I am trying to figure out how to use LibreOffice Writer to search for
Code: [Select]
[td][tr] and add two CRs to that code.  Found several solutions online but none have worked so far.  There will be 100's of CRs to add so I am looking for an automatic way.

fyi I am using Windows 7 and LibreOffice Writer

Thanks again

If you want me to add a load of text in specific places repetitively, give it to me. That's my jam. I literally deleted almost 700 spam topics on a Simple Machines forum one by one. I do this shit to the point of stupidity. Gimme the files and tell me what and where.

I don't know LibreOffice, but use the search/replace function, search for
Code: [Select]
[td][tr] and replace with
Code: [Select]
[td][tr]whatever
There should be some kind of help in the search/replace box that explains how to code in a CR, at least that's how it is in other editors I've used.
Be careful to only run that once - otherwise it would add more CRs. If there's a constant delimiter after where the CRs are to be added include that in the search/replace to avoid that.

EDIT: code tags or all hell breaks loose...

Thanks everyone

I got the search and replace to work and I have posted a test for a few hours to see if the CRs remain.  If so I will start updating the list tonight.   :-+

Proof positive that you're young.  :) As one gets older eventually one reaches an age where dying isn't a nebulous thing that only happens to other people, it becomes something that one knows is a certainty for one personally, not then but someday in one's future. Give it another 20 years or so and it becomes something that one realises one probably ought to plan for, especially if one has a health scare.

When one of my relatives hit 80 she started tidying things up, giving away things that she wanted to make sure got passed along to certain family members and friends, and making arrangements for the inevitable, way prematurely as it turned out, she lasted until 97. Quite normal behaviour for someone old enough that the fact that they are not immortal has properly sunk in, just as it's quite normal at 20 to act as if you're going to live forever.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

Have to giggle   ;D  at clueless unobservant younger knobs that think old age only happens to others with bad luck, faulty physiology,
or aged people were beamed down here in that state for some species variety!

or real aging happens only to the special people, one day after NEVER..

Perhaps the mummified 'immortal' hoarders decaying in the pyramids thought along the same lines?   :palm:
