For anyone who was following along, I ended up with the Everio HD GZ-HM30BU -- a great little camera for anyone doing not-super-professional stuff (vlogging, etc). It looks great, easy to use, and I really like how simple the controls are.

Definitely worth checking out -- I got mine for under $50.

Now the search to find free editing software starts.  If anyone has suggestions let me know.

The Australian VideoPad is very easy to use, and free/cheap.

I had a few issues with file compatibility, so I'm using Sony VideoStudio

Windows Movie Maker is still an option too. It doesnt come in windows any more but you can add it as part of the windows live essentials download.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I downloaded Movie Maker but not real thrilled with it.  Feels a little cumbersome using it.  I looked at the reviews for Sony Movie Studio (did not find anything on SONY VideoStudio) and think I'll try that.  It looks like it will handle the audio a little better.  Tax deadline here tomorrow and I have money I have to spend so this will be a good use.

Making a decent video is so much more than the hardware. Within limits I'd prefer to watch a lesser resolution camera kept still and focused than a higher resolution camera moving around all the time and hunting for focus.
