The new Analog Devices website
« on: February 24, 2015, 03:55:35 pm »
The new Analog Devices website is a complete mess now, a lot slower too to boot. Why do companies keep making these websites optimized for portrait mode mobile phone viewing (and de-optimized for landscape mode laptop or desktop viewing). The only thing still relatively sane are the parametric searches. How did any engineer at ADI ever sign off on this atrocity?

Information density seems a dirty word to modern website designers ... the majority of website redesigns I've seen in the last couple of years have made websites much less usable on desktop and laptop screens.

I was using it a few days ago. Awful. Especially of note is the website appears to be designed to be around 800 pixels wide... which means on my 1920 wide monitor, there's huge amounts of wasted space, really pisses me off when designers can't seem to build websites which scale to the monitor.

The "new" paypal site also annoys me, although it has been that way for about a year now (I think).
Most big companies are viewing their homepages as opportunities to push advertising.

I was literally running around the office yesterday and complaining about it with my hand in the air like an Italian. I dont know what kind of morons are responsible for the website layouts. It was one of the best usable before, now it is like a Infineon and Maxim copycat, with huge scrolling pictures on the front, while you need to click several times to get to the product list. I guess investors are more important than engineers, and investors love pictures of cars and running womans. Fairchild did the same last year. How does this meeting go? "Sales are not good" "I guess we need more pictures on our website and harder access to information, and also make it compatible with mobile phones, because engineers usually design stuff with tablets and mobile phones and not PCs with 2-3-4-5 screeens"

You know what the worst part is? They had an excellent technical library, with static links. I've used it in documentation, I think there are even some in my thesis (because they had exactly the same links years and years ago). Guess what. They broke it all.
I wanted to write an email complaining, but couldn't figure out their contact email.

We are maybe just getting old  8)
It is like a trend of wide screen aspect ratios and ribbon menus at the same time, it gives you soooo much space for ads...   |O .
I already have a one LCD in portrait mode.

btw: what about edn.com and eetimes ? There are useful information but I simply don't feel comfortable reading it. Is it just me ? These webs are  madness IMHO.

Glad I wasn't the only grouch who thought it was horrid!

Stupid chunky Fisher-Price bullshit makes me scroll my little browser window half a bloody mile just to see any goddamn information that I... *grumble mumble*

This trend of turning sites into nothing more than huge pretty pictures and little/hard-to-find useful content needs to stop. |O

There were probably no engineers involved in this.

Vishay and Microchip's sites are still sane and examples of good design. Cypress is pretty good too.

Atmel is bordering on acceptable (influence of the Arduino crowd...?)

But no reply received :-)

Maybe later..

I suggest we all buy and use part from Linear, which still have an excellent website. (And really good stuff anyway)

On one hand, I wouldn't avoid using their parts because their web site is crap. I like ADI parts, they're really nice.

On the other hand, there are a good few occasions where I go to their website first because it's the easiest one to use to find exactly what I'm looking for. They still are for some things, but if they continue...

+1

I think that's true of an awful lot of product briefs too. "Should we let our engineers/devs talk to the engineers/devs using our producs? Nah, we'll get marketing to write it as if end users care about the tools used..."

well - now you know their parts, but next year? They kill their selling rate for new projects because you don`t find their interesting stuff anymore and move to LT or someone else...

You dont have to surf this optimized-for-teenagers-with-iphones website... using a search engine will get you immedately to the data sheet or product pages you are looking for. Less chance to see advertising, I fear.

Google can't do a parametric search on variable gain amplifiers... :(

There's a big difference between searching and browsing: serendipity.

The AD site is/was one I would browse to find things that I didn't know I was looking for.

Clear example: Amazon is the best way of finding the book you know you want - but a small bookshop is the best way of finding (and then doing) something that hasn't crossed your mind before.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

I tried to post feedback. Was going to say that the new site sucks  :--

Submit a Customer Service request."

I used a customized adblock to get rid of that top car and girl banner crap that took up 80% of my screen.

Put this in your adblock custom filter (pasted as an image because only the preview function gets the URLs right):

FINAL EDIT:  I put the lines into a pastebin, since the forum was getting it wrong (it always wants to format the URL, even inside a code block!)

codeboy2K THANK YOU

After adding those three lines the website loads in 2 seconds rather than 45 (and I am on a 100Mb connection). Whoever wrote the code for that site must be insane.

You can respond, and tell somebody what you think of the new design.

If you open the frontpage in a "plain" browser (no ad/popup blocking), then at the bottom right there is a triangular tab for feedback.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Thanks for the code codeboy2K!

Don't know about you but basically I use two things on manufacturer pages:

- Parametric search
- Datasheet

Occasionally, circuit design / calculators.

The rest naaaah.
