With the built in power transistor it can be used to make a direct mains powered DC DC converter, or as a single-ish (if isolation is needed then some isolated feedback IC is needed) IC flyback converter or such.
Believe it or not, pointy haired people do exist!

These type of solutions existed for a while now...
Samsung had their samsung power switch lineup (which are now obsolete)
Power integration,
and ST of course..


I m sure there are many many more players..  :-)

That would be handy for powering controls or other such things which don't require much power, but the thing is hooked up to 480 three phase. Large machine tools come to mind. I like the integrated switch and low external parts count. Unfortunately these make you life so easy type parts sometimes go obsolete as soon as they arrive. ST is generally pretty good about that, but you always have to keep it in mind.
