Old TV Tubes, & Electric Motors !
« on: April 23, 2019, 11:13:55 am »
Killing two birds with one stone here...  :)
[1]
Recently, someone posted about rejuvenating old TV CRT Tubes. It got me 'rememberin!!!'
Would be interesting if anyone can back this up ??
MANY years ago, an old Tech boss told me about his time as a production line manager, for
a company, (not sure which one!), making some of the original B&W commercial TV's....
They started having reported back 'failures', that soon seemed to based on a 'time' factor.
These 'failures' were all to do with the HV coils for the tubes, breaking down !
Back then, there was a production line of Women, (the norm), and they used bare hands.
They finally traced the problem date-wise to a Woman, (Women?), who hand wound the coils,
and on those 'production' dates, they were on their monthly period !!  (Privately questioned).
According to them, at that time, their slightly moist 'skin' (fingers) are more Acidic then, and
was the cause of the insulation breakdown of the windings !!   :(
Anyway... Surgical gloves later, the problem went away   8)

I wonder how many, (if any!), general Electricians these days know anything about re-winding
electric motors now, from their original apprenticeship, onwards ???   I know of course that there
are many types of 'Electricians', from basic electrical, to Electrical 'Fitters' (more mechanical), etc.
However, I was taught how to re-wind EVERYTHING haha... Armatures, 1 & 3 ph stators...
I KNOW it's a 'throw-away' World now, but when you are working in remote locations like I
often was, you have to 'Fix' it !  And back in production so many hours later !!  ;)
A general Plumber/Carpenter has to know almost everything, (if old enough) & good on them!
However I'm SURE that the average 'House-Wirer' here, would know 'nothing' about even basic
industrial control circuits/systems.   We need to keep the 'old' knowledge going !

Diagonal of 1x1 square = Root-2. Ok.
Diagonal of 1x1x1 cube = Root-3 !!!  Beautiful !!

1) It's plausible I suppose, but I would have expected the coils to be machine wound, even back then.

2) Larger motors are still re-wound because it's still cheaper, than buying a new one.

1) A footnote from Ralph B. Balwin's book "The Deadly Fue"

"One set of fuzes which performed very poorly was tracked down by interchanging fuzes and batteries. The trouble was in the battery. The faulty batteries were then traced to one production line. It was found that intervals of about one month, the batteries produced became defective. The cause was a woman on the assembly line whose fingers beacame very acid at the time of her period."
