Actually, a stethascope can come in handy to diagnose mechanical issues with hard drives, fans, or anything else with moving parts that could have bearing wear or whatnot.

I prefer to use a long screwdriver with my thumb pressed on the handle end, and put the knuckle of my thumb on my ear, pressing against that little flap to close the ear canal. Works really well.
Maybe that's not a function dial, but rather it's the world's first wind-up clockwork multimeter.
