Name for 1/16 of something
« on: February 05, 2021, 04:52:34 pm »
Hi,

After endless googling and head scratching, asking as many people as I can find, I haven't found the name (if there is one) for 1/16th of something.

If you have quarters the name is a quadrant, 8 is octant, so what's 16?

Of course, there might not be one, in which case any ideas for names would be appreciated!

I wondered about Hexarant, but it kind of infers six (from hexagon) as would hextant.

Sixteenth is going to be ambiguous in terms of everything else it has to fit with.

All suggestions gratefully received

An Ounce is 1/16

Maybe "Seizant" from the French for 16

My vote goes to "hexadecant". The term is mildly popular in chemistry, it seems.

Learn decimal.
Everything over a quarter is a waste of time.

Please express 1/3  in decimal, to the same precision!  :D

Easy, I'll even write it in fewer digits:
.̅3

Which may or may not look right, depending on what font you're viewing it in, etc. :-DD

It looks like a fraction where you forgot to put in the numerator! :D

1/3 has a denominator less than 1/4. Apart from that, who cares? Try machining something to the 30th decimal.

I thought that was what German apprentices had to do with hand tools, before they are allowed anywhere near precision machinery? :D

十六の一

"One of sixteen"

Almost sounds like a Borg designation!

Sometimes when doing tile work I grind them to 1/2 of 1/32.
