Hilarious AliExpress rules workaround.
« on: August 27, 2021, 08:04:33 pm »
I was looking for stuff on AliExpress, and a picture caught my eye. The picture looked like a gun silencer, but the description did not make any sense at all: "Aluminum 12" 10" 6" Extension Spiral 1/2-20 1/2-28 5/8-24 M14*1 M14*1L Car Fuel Filter Car Solvent Trap for NAPA 4003 WIX 24003" (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001450369678.html)

With features like "Great for a fuel filter", "Fuel Type: fuel filter(ONLY for car use)", and even a picture inside the car hood.

But the Q&A section contains such gems as "On AK 47 7,62*39 What do you need, tell me please ???" and "Which is ideal for AR15 5.56?"

There are a lot of listings like this, some even advertise exact compatible car types.

Obviously they are trying to dodge prohibition to sell firearm parts, but this made me chuckle.

If you accidentally ever click the wrong item you'll end up with some very weird suggestions.
I remember searching for stainless steel thin wall tubing, and then a bunch of rods with rifling showed up. Clearly intended to be used on long range type rifles.
And then there was the endless wigs, not sure what triggered that.

just make sure to get a license and tax stamp before you buy it if you intend to make it into a suppressor, afaik the penalty for an illegal suppressor is up 10years in prison and up to $250000 fine

I'm fairly certain these are a honeypot. I've even seen dedicated sites selling them, advertising on YouTube. As already mentioned, it's a serious federal crime in the USA if you don't have the proper expensive paperwork.

This perhaps illustrates the impossibility of legislating morality.

1.  Yes the penalties for possession of prohibited gun accessories draws extremely stiff penalties in the US, and probably several other places.

2.  In many places in the US it is legally required to have an exhaust spark suppressor on small gas engines used on lawn motors, string trimmers, chain saws,  all terrain vehicles and anything else with a gasoline engine that is likely to be used in vegetated areas.  Makes perfect sense as wild fires are a huge and growing problem.

3.  When unmounted at least some types of the two devices, one legal and the other illegal, are indistinguishable.  There is nothing other than custom that makes the mounting methods different.

So, in principal at least, it is impossible to tell whether a crime is intended or committed until the device is mounted somewhere.  But I am sure the US law forbids the sale of such devices.  I am sure this line of thinking is behind the ads you see even though these devices probably are terrible fuel filters.  The vendor can get away with it, and and possibly the purchaser until the device is actually used.

as I understand it it can take a year to get the paper work to buy a suppressor, but only a couple of weeks to get the paperwork
to build one, but you better have the papers in order before you buy stuff to start building anything

In this very international forum, this answer is going to vary widely based on location. Were you speaking about Denmark, or referring to the USA?

In the case of the US, the federal paperwork isn't that difficult assuming you're a citizen with a good record. Services to do it for you are also available, and some places that sell ready-made suppressors bundle paperwork in the sale. As for state laws, they're illegal in 8 of the 50 states, which leaves 42. Also Puerto Rico. Likely the other territories also, but I haven't checked. As for expensive....if the price of the gun doesn't bother you, then you can afford the accessories.

Yes, an e-file form 1 (build and register a NFA item) is only 60 days, form 4 (transfer an already built one) currently listed at 7 months. That said I think most of the people building a can on a form 1 are doing it with better parts than Chinese 6061 aluminum,  not worth wasting the hefty $200 registration tax on chinesium and the laws around rebuilding a worn suppressor are kinda goofy. That and in an abundance of caution (ATF are known to kick in doors and shoot dogs) people normally buy/build and register just the tube, then buy the ends and baffles to make it functional after they definitely have paperwork on the thing.

USA, all I know about gun laws is from watching (mostly gun Jesus) youtube :P

But as I understand it getting the paperwork through the bureaucracy can take many months

I somehow never realised this. Thanks for pointing it out.

Still, the fact that the "more to love" section contains such items as spiral reamers and Set of 1/2"-28 Gunsmithing Tap + Die Set (1/2" X 28) For 9mm, 223, 5.56, 22LR 1/2x28 Tap + 1/2x28 Die Right Hand Thread Die New is a bit ... coincidental.

The silencer thing has always seemed kind of weird to me. The problem I think is that most people think a silencer works the way Hollywood show it, making a gun almost silent. In reality many bullets travel at supersonic speed and a large part of the noise you hear is a sonic boom from the bullet passing through the air. A silencer on a gun is very much like the muffler on a lawnmower or chainsaw, it reduces the noise from absolutely deafening to extremely loud but not so likely to cause permanent damage to your hearing. They seem like a sensible device to make a gun safer for the operator and less disturbing to people nearby, they are NOT going to enable a person to shoot somebody covertly like a movie assassin. Movies are fantasy, they are not real. If a person learns everything they know about guns from watching movies then nearly everything they know is wrong.

Yeah, there still are people who think that the "chimp shooting AK47" video was real ;)

Video aside, anyone who's been around AK's knows that's not what they sound like.

I got the wigs one too for some also unknown reason. Once I'd also searched for something with "silicone" in the description, the suggestions got very interesting.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

They say "an ill wind blows no good" and all that. In this case your discomfiture is my comfort, because despite following these kind of links to see what folks are talking about I don't get followed around by those kinds of things, which tells me that all my efforts to avoid exactly this kind of tracking and profiling are at least reasonably effective.

Good to know.  But, I guess if I didn't have an Aliexpress account, this would have not happened as these ads are confined to their flyers which I receive.

Meh. I thought that you started to receive unsolicited spam emails with ads for stuff you have browsed on Ali.
That would be more interesting ;D
