Starlink and Co bad for ozon hole
« on: June 13, 2024, 07:35:51 pm »
Satellite “megaconstellations” may jeopardize recovery of ozone hole: https://news.agu.org/press-release/satellite-megaconstellations-may-jeopardize-recovery-of-ozone-hole/

The aluminum oxide left behind when a satellite burns up entering the Earth’s atmosphere destroys the stratospheric ozone.

I'd like to see any evidence how alumina damages the ozone layer as it's extremely inert. I googled a bit and found nothing other than this just released shit.

To link this exclusively to Starlink is obviously laughable. Interestingly, with cheap, high-capacity launchers like Starship on the horizon, aluminium might get mostly replaced by steel and (more) composites, if this issue is determined to be bad enough.

It's about SRBs and from what I've seen the damage is done by chlorine emitted from those which can be activated by alumina emitted from those as well.
In any case it's laughable because a few rockets with SRBs like Atlas V, Vulcan Centaur, Ariane 6, SLS will emit more alumina than all of those satellites burning, not to say chlorine and other stuff.
