Most Australian engineers are not interested in sport.
Generalising here, I have noticed in the electronics engineering environment, sport is rarely mentioned. Many engineers know nothing about football, but that is partly because most of them were born overseas. At least we have footy tipping at work. But in the "secular" world, it is a different matter.
I did hear we beat the Poms at rugby. Here in Victoria, few people play rugby and there is little interest. It is AFL here. Go over the border to New South Wales and it like stepping into another country with sport - rugby is the go there and in Queensland. Even so, there are AFL teams sparsely represented in other states and some of them are very good. Unfortunately, football is not so much about sport, it is about money. It is a business. Hence why some coaches and clubs swap clubs according to money offered, not loyalty to the local club where they grew up. There are people here, and I am sure in your country, where sport appears to have become a substitute for religion. But then again so has the endless pursuit to get more stuff.
