Different Fields in EE
« on: August 22, 2019, 05:28:41 pm »
Hi,
I am an undergraduate student of sophomore standing studying Electrical and Computer engineering. I know that there are a lot of different career paths in EE, and I am unsure of how to figure out exactly what I want to do in electrical engineering. If anyone has a list of different types of EE careers, or advice on how to narrow down my options that would be very much appreciated. The only topic that I currently have particular interest in is PCB design, but I'm not sure if there are jobs where you specifically design PCBs.
Thank you!

Go with what you like as long as you liking it is not being influenced too much by the university you're studying in

And regardless, buy "the art of electronics" by Horowitz.

There are many jobs were you specifically design PCBs, it's called PCB design engineer. I have done it for a while, you need patience and concentration
In many companies that are not too big, that may not fill the full day.

You will need to integrate your knowledge on the topic of PCB design, I have NEVER met someone good at it straight out of university.
Stay away from the internet on the topic.

Some good books on the topic:
EMC Made Simple: Printed Circuit Board and System Design
Printed circuits handbook seventh edition (not to read, but to keep as a reference on the topic)

If your university has an exchange program with China move your ass and get on it NOW

The only topic that I currently have particular interest in is PCB design, but I'm not sure if there are jobs where you specifically design PCBs.

There are, but they are mostly technician jobs rather than engineer jobs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, of course, but it is worth recognising the distinction.

The PCB jobs have a tendency (not absolute) to be tied to a specific CAD package. I recommend that you speed-read an old story: https://www.abelard.org/asimov.php

IMNSHO at this stage you should concentrate on getting a good theoretical understanding of a wide range of topics, and then put some of them into practical use (in your own time if necessary); interviewers really like that. You don't know what will be interesting and relevant in 3 years, let alone 30 years - but the solid theory will remain unchanged and remain useful to you.

There's plenty of time to specialise later; indeed later the problem is keeping up to speed with changes across a wide range of topics.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
