Buddy you have guts to speak about a mess, when your long name is creating a mess.

Yeah it's long but to be fair to a new user signing up, how are they to know what is too long when they only have the field length of the signon form to go by. Why not enforce a maximum limit on username length at that point?

It's a test, designed to reveal users with napoleon complex or similar propensities

I doubt that's an issue when you're 6'5" and 22 stone :D

Attached is an action shot as of 5 minutes ago on my messy "bench".

I loved the old Sierra games! Have many fond memories. Not sure if it was Sierra but I used to play "Island of Dr. Brain" as a kid. Sim City 2000 remains my favourite game to this day. What else? Need for Speed, Carmageddon, Jazz Jackrabbit, Epic Pinball, Sim Farm... all good stuff.

I am about embark on a re-creation of two (original) doom deathmatch machines. Trouble is, the source code is available to run on modern Linux machines but doing the null modem thing between two of them is not so clear. So still agonising which path to take. Do I try and revive old hardware or do I use the modern stuff and hit the inevitable roadblock.

You tell me how I am to justify the time and resources to do a test roll out as you describe on a forum like this over paid work.

Everyone who has been around here long enough knows this and is thankful to you for it. A new user won't know that. In fact the fewer who know it the better. That means things are going smoothly.

Thanks mate, and yeah, we have not had any major hiccups for quite some time now and I entirely agree. It is like what I tell my clients, "if you have to report an outage to me, I am not doing what you pay me to do".

There's more too the OP has no idea about.  ::)

Dave changed the background a while back and that made the SMF label, link and version more hidden which is the subject matter of this thread.
Suggestions for forum changes come forward from time to time and Dave has resisted updating to some SMF versions for one reason or another but has added patches/fixes no doubt after some research and discussions with gnif.

That this dude has the outright cheek to register with such a long name and after 2 weeks have a dig at the forum and stir shit I find more offensive than his login.
Keep going like this and you won't find many friends here.

You are free to find anything you wish "offensive" if you're daft enough to spend energy on it - it's your time you're wasting. Do you think I sit around letting random internet people "offend" me, wasting my time and draining my energy? Go ahead, take all the "offence" you like, it's your time and stress level - make a scene and tie yourself up in knots over it if you want to be all silly about it and blow it out of proportion.

Or... you could just say "Ah well, never mind, that's life" and walk away like a man would do. :)

PS: I don't come here to "make friends" - I come here because I love electronics, I don't need any internet "friends" (nor do I come to make "enemies", but if you CHOOSE to take offence? Oh well, I think I'll just about get over that...), I live a very happy and wholly fulfilled life, sorry (for you) if that bothers you but that's how it is.

Enjoy your week, don't let me get to you - forget about me if I am so terrible, cheerio!

This thread... wow. I do not desire to "make friends" online, maybe that wasn't clear? I am here to discuss electronics - if you have a burning passion for people to "make friends" then maybe you should apply for a job as a kindergarten teacher and allow me to live my life without "advice" from arrogant know it alls online, strangers at that, and the day I take "advice" from a complete stranger who demonstrates contempt and ego is the day I've given u on life, and that day won't ever come. :)

You're not gonna make any progress with this, you better trust me on that score and save yourself a LOT of wasted effort, I am not here to seek emotional support or "life coaching", so quit whilst you're ahead, you must have better things to do, I don't want to waste your time, ok? :) thanks.

OK, so I have NT 3.51 running now with proper video drivers. For some reason it was crashing with the previous card. But it works flawlessly with a Cirrus Logic 5430 card.

So, it still looks a mess - surely it's better it can be legible than not?

Sure, if I can figure out how to edit the main template to change the footer colour I will.

Speaking of ugly, your forum name  is too long and overlaps. Much worse than the footer.

Cheers mate. :)

Speaking of common sense (we are, after all), were my username "too long":

~1 Your forum should have a char limit and have prevented me from exceeding it, and ask me to choose a shorter username.

~2 The code for your forum should have been patched to cater for such a trivial condition; it is broken if it causes this error ONLY on my name length in a certain position in the layout; the internet is full of VERY long words, and MUCH longer char strings than this are present on this very forum - it would be a rather disastrous state of affairs if the internet couldn't handle long words. LOL!

Or
~3 You could have noticed that it was a problem (as others have in the past) and requested to change your display name.

Anyway, I've fixed it for you, you're welcome.

Dave: If you like I can adjust the footer text, just let me know what you want. Honestly I would rather see you spend your valuable time on content/videos, etc rather then dealing with this kind of crap.

If you think you know were the code is and it's easy and zero risk, sure, thanks. Otherwise there is only one person who seems to care...

With respect, but to be totally honest, the footer links at the bottom of the page on this forum are USELESS - you can't see mid-blue FINE PRINT links on a light/dark grey patterned background - it not only makes your eyes hurt but it's a MESS.

There, I've said it - do you have any plans to make it more usable, Mr Dave? I don't want to sound ungrateful - that's not my stance - my stance is WHO ON EARTH gave this the green light? You are one for pointing out design flaws without holding back for a second, so in the same vein I would hope you take this feedback on board... and, hopefully, act upon it when you have a spare half an hour.

Thank you :)

This is stock forum colour schemes, like it, shut up about it or leave.

As regards my username breaking layout, it appears EEVblog runs on SMF 2.0.13 (outdated) and in 2.1 they were well aware of it, ergo, fixed it... FIVE YEARS AGO! I am sure Dave has his reasons for sticking with his current version, but just as a heads up - it has been fixed and is NOT my fault, ok? Thanks.
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=493787.0

A pretty damn good reason, yeah:

They just released 2.0.13 a few weeks and I upgraded to that.

I have never skipped an SMF update. I just upgraded the other week to 2.0.13 when they released it.
